Ukraine may not be the most sought-after country in the world for higher education, but it sure is a hidden gem. It has an array of jaw-dropping architectures, beautiful cathedrals, and astonishing mountain ranges. It is the kind of place that offers a lot of adventure at the side of being home to 700 higher educational institutions. 

The number of international students currently studying in Ukraine is around 75000. These students belong to 154 countries. This article contains a round-up of some of the scholarships that are available in Ukraine. These scholarships will help you fund your higher education in Ukraine if you decide to study there.

Medium of Instruction and the IELTS Requirement in Ukrainian Universities:

The universities and colleges in Ukraine teach in English, Ukrainian, Russian and French. Students coming from abroad have to prove their language proficiency in one of the aforementioned languages if the chosen language of instruction is not their native language or they have never primarily been taught in this language. Students who wish to study in Ukrainian or Russian language can take up a language program upon reaching Ukraine if they can’t speak the language fluently.

Cost of Living in Ukraine:

Ukraine is a very cheap country to live in. In fact, it is one of the primary reasons why more and more international students are choosing it for higher education. A student can live off 1500 USD per year in Ukraine. The cost of accommodation is a major expense. The transportation, food, and utilities are fairly cheap.

Working While Studying in Ukraine:

International students study in Ukraine on a residence visa, unlike many other countries that issue a student visa. Students who wish to work and study simultaneously will have to apply for a work permit. The work permit allows students to work for up to 40 hours a week.

Top Tier Schools of Ukraine:

Ukraine has quite an impressive number of higher educational institutions. But it’s the top-tier institutions that are the most sought-after. These are the van Franko National University of Lviv, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Sumy State University, and National Technical University of Ukraine Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. 

List of Fully Funded Scholarships in Ukraine:

Ukraine offers a number of scholarship opportunities to international students. These scholarships are mostly country-specific. The sponsors usually are the Ukrainian government and the International Education Council of Ukraine. One thing to remember is that most of these scholarships are aimed toward educating students about Ukrainian heritage, culture, policies, and language.

  • Language Institute in L’viv and University of Kansas Collaborative Awards:

Students who are currently studying at the University of Kansas can take up a Ukrainian language course during their summer break at the Language Institute in L’viv. Students get to stay in Ukraine for free with a Ukrainian family. They will be able to study the Ukrainian policy and language.

Students from the USA have the opportunity to apply for other scholarships as well which are available for a semester at most. These scholarships are available for short programs and the students who are interested can apply.

  • Scholarships by IREX:

The IREX is a not-for-profit organization in Ukraine. This organization offers scholarships to students to take up research studies. The funding is gathered from the local and central governments. The period of scholarship is up to 9 months. During this time, the scholarship holders have to carry out research regarding the foreign policy of Ukraine.

  • The School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) Scholarship Program:

The scholarships by the school of Russian and Asian Studies are meant to help students from Asia and Europe. Students have to be studying one of the listed programs in one of the affiliated universities. One such scholarship is being in Kyiv city whereby the students have to study the Russian language and foreign policy. The scholarship is worth 5,000 USD which is given in the form of a tuition fee waiver. 

Another scholarship is for students who are studying arts and culture in Ukraine. These scholarships are worth 700 USD per recipient and give the students a chance to work in the museums and NGOs of Ukraine. 

  • Boren Scholarships and Fellowships:

The Boren scholarships are given to students who want to study in a country that is important for national security. Ukraine and Russia are also included in the list of those countries. Students who are studying Ukrainian or Russian language programs are entitled to a higher share of the scholarship. 

These awards are highly competitive. The scholarships are worth 20,000 USD and the fellowships are worth 30,000 USD. Recipients are also required to work for the Ukrainian government upon completion of their study programs. The department within which the recipients can work is Defence, Homeland security, national security and the department of state.

  • The Gilman Scholarships:

The recipients of the Pell grants can apply for this scholarship. This scholarship is reserved for American students who want to pursue their higher education in another country. Students who are already enrolled in a two-year program and/or are handicapped will be given preference. Ukraine is one of the affiliated countries. The total worth of the award is 5,000 USD and if a recipient picks a language from the list of preferred languages, he/she will be awarded an additional award of 8,000 USD. 

Choosing the Russian language lets the students get the additional award as well as lets them stay in Ukraine even after the completion of their degree programs. Ukraine typically welcomes people who are fluent in the Russian language.
