PhD & Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunities in Korea
South Korea’s premier research institution, Gyeongsang National University (GNU), is now welcoming high-caliber international candidates. Whether you are looking to start your Doctoral journey or seeking a prestigious platform for your Postdoctoral research, the Korean government has opened the doors for the 2026/2027 academic cycle.
There are currently two distinct funding tracks available for international scholars. The first is the world-renowned Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), which targets PhD candidates, and the second is the Brain Pool Fellowship, designed to attract the world’s elite Postdoctoral researchers to the Gyeongsang National University campus. Both programs are designed to foster innovation in high-impact areas like Computational Mechanics, Multiscale Modeling, and Aerospace Engineering.

Eligibility Criteria
The following requirements must be met by all international applicants seeking the GKS Doctoral Award at Gyeongsang National University Korea.
- Both the applicant and parents must hold non-Korean citizenship.
- A minimum CGPA of 80% (or 2.64/4.0) from the previous degree.
- Must be under 40 years old (or under 45 for ODA recipient professors).
- No TOPIK required initially (the free language year is provided).
How to Apply for the GKS PhD (Doctoral) Program
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is unique because you do not apply to the government first. You must apply directly to the university of Gyeongsang National University. This is known as the “University Track.”
-
Search the GNU Department List, go to the Official GKS Notice and download the “University Information” file. Check if your specific major is offered at University.
-
Contact a Professor (Recommended), while not strictly mandatory for all majors, reaching out to a professor in your field at GNU to discuss your research interest significantly increases your chances of being “recommended” by the university.
-
Download the 2026 Application Forms. You must fill out the personal statement, study plan, and medical assessment.
-
Unlike many modern applications, GNU requires hard copies. You must mail your original, Apostilled (or Consular Confirmed) documents (Degrees, Transcripts, Birth Certificate) to the GNU International Office in Jinju, South Korea.
-
If your documents pass the initial screening, Gyeongsang University will contact you for a video interview (via Zoom or Skype).
-
If you pass the university round, it sends your file to the National Institute for International Education (NIIED). They do a final check, and if they approve, you are officially a GKS Scholar!
2. Brain Pool Fellowship – Postdoctoral Track
The Brain Pool Fellowship is a specialized high-level grant managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea. It aims to invite outstanding overseas scientists to GNU Korea (Gyeongsang National University) to enhance the country’s R&D competence.
Brain Pool Funding and Benefits Breakdown
The salary for the NRF Brain Pool Program is calculated to match international standards, often reflecting your previous professional earnings.
| Benefit Category | Coverage Detail |
| Annual Salary | KRW 40 Million to 90 Million (Based on experience). |
| Relocation Costs | Airfare and moving expenses are fully covered. |
| Research Budget | Dedicated funds for lab equipment, travel, and conferences. |
| Duration | 6 months to 3 years (renewable based on performance). |
| Family Support | Assistance with visas and local settlement for dependents. |
Brain Pool Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Brain Pool Postdoctoral Grant at Gyeongsang National Uni, researchers must demonstrate high-impact potential.
- Must hold a PhD degree obtained outside of South Korea.
- Must have at least 5 years of R&D experience outside Korea (post-PhD).
- You must have a confirmed host professor at Gyeongsang National University.
- Must be currently residing outside of Korea at the time of application.
How to Apply for the Brain Pool Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Brain Pool Fellowship is not a student application; it is a Joint Research Proposal. You cannot apply for this on your own. It is a partnership between you (the Researcher) and a Professor at GNU South Korea (the Host).
-
This is the most vital step. You must find a professor at GNU Korea (Gyeongsang National University) whose lab matches your PhD research. Email them your CV and a research proposal. You cannot proceed until a professor agrees to “Host” you.
-
Once a professor agrees, you and the professor will work together to write a detailed research project plan that you intend to carry out at Gyeongsang National University, Jinju Korea.
-
The Host Professor (not you) will log into the IRIS (Integrated Research Information System) or the NRF portal to submit the application. They will upload your PhD degree, your career certificates, and the joint research plan.
-
After the professor submits, the Gyeongsang National University Research Department must officially approve and “sign off” on the application within the portal.
-
If selected, the NRF sends the funding contract to Gyeongsang National University Jinju, and you will receive an invitation letter to begin your visa process.
