UC New Zealand Scholarships 2027 Offer Up to Full Tuition for 1st-Year Students
If you plan to begin your first undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury in 2027, you should not search for one “UC first-year scholarship.” The university offers several awards, and your correct application route depends on where you are completing secondary school, your citizenship, your achievements and the type of financial support you need.
The strongest reason to apply is that UC does not judge every candidate only by grades. Your leadership, sport, community service, cultural contribution, resilience, financial circumstances and personal challenges may also strengthen your application.
Are You Eligible for the 6 August UC NZ Scholarship Round?
You should use the main Incoming First-Year Scholarship application if you are completing your university entrance qualification at a New Zealand secondary school and intend to start your first undergraduate degree at UC in 2027.
If you are completing high school outside New Zealand, you will generally need to use one of UC’s offshore international scholarship rounds instead.
Which Scholarship Should You Choose as an Overseas Student?
If you are studying at a school outside New Zealand, the main award to investigate is the UC International First Year Scholarship—Offshore. The scholarship is generally worth NZ$15,000 towards tuition fees. For students planning to begin in Semester One 2027, applications are expected to open on 5 September 2026 and close on 31 October 2026.
UC also offers regional High Achievers Scholarships for eligible applicants from China, Hong Kong, India and selected Southeast Asian countries. Applications for these regional awards are scheduled to close on 23 October 2026.
Do not submit an application simply because you found an earlier deadline online. First check:
- Where you are completing secondary school
- Which entrance qualification you will use
- Whether the award accepts your citizenship
- Whether it is open to offshore international students
- Whether you must apply for UC admission before the scholarship deadline
Choosing the wrong category could make your application ineligible even if your academic record is strong.
Will NZ$15,000 Cover Your Full Study Costs?
No. You should treat the standard international first-year scholarship as partial tuition funding, not a fully funded package.
International undergraduate tuition at UC can exceed NZ$37,000 per year and may be higher for some degrees. Even after receiving NZ$15,000, you may still need substantial funding for the remaining tuition balance. You must also budget separately for accommodation, food, insurance, the Student Services Levy, books, travel, visa expenses and daily living costs.
This scholarship is still valuable because it can significantly reduce your first-year tuition pressure. However, you should apply only after calculating how you will finance the remaining amount.
Do You Need Perfect Grades?
No, but strong academic performance will still matter for merit-based and international awards. UC’s scholarship portfolio also rewards applicants who can prove achievement in areas such as:
- Leadership and measurable community impact
- High-level sporting performance
- Cultural participation
- Service to a school or community
- Financial hardship
- Personal adversity or difficult circumstances
- Māori or Pacific leadership and engagement
- Relocation and accommodation needs
Your application should not merely state that you are hardworking, talented or passionate. Explain what you achieved, what responsibility you held, who benefited and what changed because of your involvement.
For example, writing that you “participated in community service” is weak. Explaining that you organised a tutoring programme for 40 schoolchildren, recruited volunteers and continued the project for two years gives the selection panel evidence it can assess.
Can You Apply for More Than One UC Scholarship?
Yes. You should apply for every award whose requirements you genuinely satisfy because UC may offer more than one scholarship to the same applicant. However, some awards may not be held together. You must read the co-tenure conditions before accepting multiple scholarships.
Apply broadly, but do not select irrelevant categories. A well-supported application for four suitable scholarships is stronger than claiming eligibility for ten awards without evidence.
Must You Secure Admission Before Applying?
You may not need to hold a final admission offer when submitting the scholarship application, but international applicants may need to have already applied for admission to UC by the relevant scholarship deadline.
Scholarship selection and university admission are separate processes. Winning funding will not excuse you from meeting academic entry requirements, subject prerequisites, English-language conditions or visa rules.
You should therefore begin your UC admission application early rather than waiting for the scholarship portal to open.
Can You Apply Without IELTS at University of Canterbury?
You may be able to submit the University of Canterbury scholarship application without IELTS, but you must still satisfy UC’s English-language requirement before enrolment. For most undergraduate programmes, UC normally requires IELTS Academic 6.0 with no individual band below 5.5. Approved alternatives may include TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge English and the Duolingo English Test.

You should reconsider the offshore international awards if you need a scholarship covering full tuition, accommodation, flights and living costs. The standard NZ$15,000 award will reduce your expenses, but it will not normally finance your entire education in New Zealand.
