40 UK Universities Where IELTS Is Not Mandatory for 2027 Entry
International students planning to study in the UK in 2027 do not necessarily need IELTS. Many British universities accept TOEFL, PTE Academic, Cambridge English, LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, Duolingo, previous English-medium education or other approved qualifications instead.
There is, however, an important difference between “IELTS is not required” and “English proficiency is not required.” Most applicants still have to demonstrate that they can study successfully in English.
As of 12 August 2026, the University of Manchester has already published English-language information specifically referring to September 2027 entry, while several other universities are still operating under current 2026/27 or general admissions policies. Manchester accepts alternatives including PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English and Trinity ISE, depending on the programme.
Applicants targeting autumn 2027 should therefore use the following as a verified planning list, but check the individual degree page again before submitting an application because accepted tests and minimum scores can change between admissions cycles.

The alternatives are not theoretical. Southampton, for example, currently lists PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1/C2, LanguageCert, Oxford ELLT, Duolingo and several other qualifications alongside IELTS. Edinburgh accepts English tests as well as certain degrees taught and assessed in English, while Liverpool accepts international tests and country-specific qualifications.
Dundee’s English-language guidance, updated in July 2026, also confirms that some applicants may be considered using previous English-medium education supported by an official Medium of Instruction letter, although course restrictions apply.
Does “Without IELTS” Mean You Can Study Without an English Test?
Sometimes—but not automatically.
An applicant may avoid taking a new English test if the UK university accepts previous education as sufficient English language proof for admissions or UK scholarships. Depending on the institution and country, this might include:
- a previous degree taught and assessed entirely in English;
- an official Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate;
- GCSE, IGCSE, IB or another recognised school English qualification;
- an English qualification from the applicant’s home country; or
- an exemption based on nationality or previous education.
Edinburgh, for example, explicitly provides routes involving degrees taught and assessed in English, while Dundee states that certain applicants with qualifying previous education may be assessed using Medium of Instruction evidence.
That does not mean every Pakistani, Indian, Nigerian, Bangladeshi or other international applicant with an MOI letter will automatically receive a waiver. The university and individual programme decide whether that evidence is acceptable.
What About the UK Student Visa Without IELTS?
IELTS itself is not universally required for a UK Student visa.
UK government rules require students studying at degree level or above to demonstrate English at CEFR B2. Importantly, a qualifying Higher Education Provider can assess a student’s English itself and may use a different test or approved evidence instead of IELTS.
This is why an applicant can potentially receive admission, a CAS and a Student visa without ever sitting IELTS.
Different rules may apply to foundation programmes, pre-sessional English courses or cases where a university specifically requires a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test. For international students, the opportunity is real: studying in the UK without IELTS is possible at many universities in 2027, but studying without demonstrating adequate English is a very different claim—and for most applicants, that is not what “IELTS-free” admission means.
