Russia Open Doors Scholarship 2027 for Bachelor, Master and PhD Students (All Subjects)

Students who want to study in Russia without paying university tuition now have a confirmed 2027 route to prepare for: registration for the Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project is officially open from August 20, 2026.

The competition is unusually broad. International applicants can compete at Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral (PhD) and Postdoctoral levels, and the entire selection process begins online. Winners in the degree tracks receive the right to study in Russia under the Russian Federation Government education quota, with tuition funded from the federal budget.

There is also a newer funding opportunity applicants should understand carefully: qualifying students studying full-time in Russian may additionally compete for government grant support covering expenses beyond tuition.

Who Can Apply This Year?

Open Doors is genuinely international: foreign citizens and stateless persons can participate, including compatriots living outside Russia. But the 2026 competition introduces very clear age bands applicants should check before investing time in a portfolio.

• Bachelor’s: age 16–23 and academically qualified to enter higher education.
• Master’s: age 20–33 with, or completing, at least a Bachelor’s-level qualification.
• PhD: age 22–35 with, or completing, a Master’s/Specialist qualification.
• Postdoctoral: age 24–39 and already holding a PhD or equivalent research doctorate.

Applicants cannot already hold the higher qualification that would make their selected study track inappropriate.

Is Open Doors 2027 Really Fully Funded?

This needs a more careful answer than many scholarship headlines provide.

Winning Open Doors gives Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD candidates tuition-free study under the Russian Government quota. Winners also receive priority when selecting eligible programs at participating universities.

A broader government grant can additionally include travel reimbursement, a monthly stipend, medical insurance and accommodation reimbursement. However, the official rules make this additional support conditional: eligible winners or runners-up must obtain quota study rights and be prepared to undertake full-time study in Russian. Grant allocation should therefore not be presented as automatically guaranteed to every Open Doors winner.

Students who need Russian-language preparation can also receive a federally funded preparatory year before beginning an eligible Russian-taught degree.

What Can You Study Through Open Doors?

The 2026 competition spans 14 broad subject areas, giving applicants considerably more choice than a narrowly targeted scholarship.

Options include Applied Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, Biology and Biotechnology, Business and Management, Chemistry and Materials Science, Clinical Medicine and Public Health, Computer and Data Science, Economics, Education and Psychology, Engineering and Technology, Physical Sciences, Politics and International Studies, Russian Language and Culture, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Urbanism and Civil Engineering.

This includes high-demand areas such as medicine, AI, data science, biotechnology, engineering and business, although available degree programs differ by track.

How to Apply for Open Doors Scholarship 2027 — Step by Step

Step 1: Create Your Open Doors Account

Registration is completed through the official Open Doors platform. Participation is completely free, and applicants should create only one account during the competition year.

Step 2: Select Your Track and Subject Area

Choose preferred Russian University along with Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD or Postdoctoral programme according to your current qualification and age. Applicants can participate in more than one subject area (You’ll have to appear for exam for all 3 selected subjects online), but if they eventually win in multiple areas they will have to select one subject area and degree program.

Step 3: Build the Portfolio Properly

The first stage is not simply an application form. Applicants complete an entry test, motivation letter and portfolio of relevant achievements, uploading evidence that supports their academic record and suitability for the selected field. Documents must be in Russian or English, or accompanied by an appropriate translation.

Step 4: Upload Your Passport Before Registration Closes

Passport details must correspond exactly with the information entered into the Open Doors account. The official rules specifically require the passport scan by the registration deadline.

Step 5: Prepare for the Online Competition Stage

Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD candidates who advance complete the second-stage tasks under online proctoring. Their screen and webcam are monitored so make sure not to use any AI or cheat techniques to pass stage 1 exam, and the test/assessment can last up to 180 minutes. The test result of 1st stage exam will be announced on November 13, 2026.

PhD candidates who progress further then face interviews with prospective supervisors, while Postdoctoral candidates ultimately interview with research project leaders.

Step 6: Selection After Initial Test

If you pass this initial test for Open doors Russian government scholarship then you’ll receive selection email for 2nd stage of scholarship process. You’ll be using the same open doors platform to submit your 2nd stage application.

Step 7: Interview and Final Selection at Third Stage

After clearing this final third stage; candidates will be interviewed and get selection confirmations.

Do You Need IELTS for Open Doors Russia Scholarship?

Open Doors itself is conducted in English or Russian, and the official rules do not impose one universal IELTS score on every participant.

However, winning the competition does not eliminate the language requirements of the eventual degree. The admitting Russian university can require documentary proof or assessment of proficiency in the language of instruction before enrollment.

Applicants should therefore distinguish between entering the Open Doors competition and satisfying the final language conditions of their chosen university program.

Deadline Applicants Should Not Misread

Registration for all four tracks of Russian Government Open Doors fully-funded Scholarship is November 1, 2026. After November 1, applicants can no longer freely edit their registration information or portfolio, so students should treat November 1, 2026 as the practical application deadline.

The competition then continues. First-stage results of open doors scholarship will get announced on November 13, Bachelor’s and Master’s winners are scheduled to be announced on December 21, 2026, while the PhD and Postdoctoral process continues through interviews with final results on February 26, 2027.
