DAAD RISE Research Internships 2027 Open for Students Worldwide

Bachelor’s students in science and engineering will again be able to spend part of summer 2027 working with research teams abroad through the DAAD RISE Worldwide programme.

RISE Worldwide connects students enrolled at German universities with research projects offered by universities and research institutions in other countries. Internships normally last between one and a half and three months and take place during the summer semester break.

The programme is particularly relevant to students who want their first serious international research experience before completing a bachelor’s degree. Instead of arranging a laboratory or research placement independently, successful applicants are matched with projects offered through the RISE network and receive financial support from DAAD.

What Is the DAAD RISE Worldwide Programme?

RISE Worldwide is a funded international research internship programme for bachelor’s students studying at German universities.

Selected students spend part of their summer working with researchers at universities and research institutions abroad. Projects are mainly offered in natural sciences, life sciences, computer science and engineering-related fields, with English normally used as the working language.

The standard internship lasts six weeks to three months, normally between June and October. Canadian internships generally run for 10 weeks to three months between May and October.

Can International Students Apply for DAAD-RISE interns Program?

Yes, but simply being an international bachelor’s student is not enough. You must be enrolled at a German university.

DAAD accepts non-German students if they are enrolled in a bachelor’s programme at a German higher education institution and intend to complete that degree there. This means a student currently completing a bachelor’s degree entirely at a university outside Germany would not qualify through this applicant route.

Applicants must also have completed at least their first semester when applying and the eligible study areas include:

• natural sciences;
• engineering;
• computer science;
• medicine;
• pharmacy.

Projects in the RISE database also cover biology and life sciences, chemistry, geosciences, physics and related areas.

Where Can You Complete the RISE-DAAD 2027 Internship?

RISE Worldwide offers research placements across dozens of countries.

For the 2027 cycle, DAAD reports more than 500 projects in 57 countries in its worldwide project database. Destinations listed include Australia, Japan, Singapore, the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, India, China, South Africa, New Zealand and many others.

Canada follows a separate application route through Mitacs Globalink.

What Funding Does RISE Worldwide Provide?

Selected students receive a DAAD scholarship rather than an unpaid placement alone. The financial package includes:

• a monthly scholarship rate determined by the host country;
• a travel allowance based on the destination;
• health insurance;
• accident insurance; and
• personal liability insurance.

Because the monthly scholarship amount varies according to destination, there is no single universal RISE Worldwide stipend that applies to every participant.

Do You Need IELTS for RISE Internship Participation?

You need evidence of English proficiency, but IELTS is only one accepted option.

For the worldwide application, DAAD states that English should generally be at approximately B2 level under the CEFR. Applicants can submit the DAAD language certificate or accepted test results including IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, TELC or Cambridge FCE, CAE or CPE. A German Abitur certificate is not accepted as the required language proof for this purpose.

Which Documents Are Required?

Applications for worldwide projects at RISE are submitted in English. DAAD currently lists:

• CV;
• project-specific motivation letter of about one to two pages;
• transcript of records;
• list of relevant courses;
• English-language proof;
• additional language proof where relevant; and
• an academic reference from a university lecturer.

The referee normally uploads the recommendation separately after receiving a link from the application system.

How Do You Apply for RISE Worldwide 2027?

The application route depends on whether you want to go to Canada or another destination. For Canada, applications are made through Mitacs Globalink from August 5 to September 16, 2026.

For other worldwide RISE projects, applicants use the RISE Worldwide internship database from October 15 to November 30, 2026 and select suitable research projects from the available database.
