GEM Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027–2029: 4 Tracks of Application

Would you use satellite data to protect forests, plan better cities or model environmental change if your tuition were covered and you received €1,400 a month? The GEM Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027–2029 supports selected students on a two-year European master’s in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management.

Applications for September 2027 entry are open. Your first decision is which of GEM’s four tracks fits your background. Can you apply before graduating? Will an English-medium degree replace IELTS? Does admission guarantee funding? Work through those questions before submitting.

Could GEM fund your European master’s in 2027?
Status: Open; applications opened 1 October 2026.
Applicants: Eligible candidates worldwide; scholarship allocation may include regional priorities.
Study: English-taught, two-year master’s; study at two universities and receive a double degree.
Funding: Tuition waiver, student insurance and €1,400 monthly for up to 24 months; approximately 17–18 scholarships for this intake.
English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 per section; approved alternatives or formal exemptions accepted.
Application fee: None.
Application deadline: 15 January 2027, 23:59 CET.
Final graduation documents: 31 July 2027.
Official information verified: 5 October 2026.

What does the GEM scholarship pay for?

Selected scholars receive a full tuition waiver, insurance and a monthly allowance of €1,400 for up to two years. That is up to €33,600 in monthly support over 24 months.

Budget travel, visas, accommodation, living costs and your laptop from that allowance: tuition and insurance are paid directly by the programme. Housing is not automatically provided. A provisional admission offer without a scholarship means you still need another funding source.

Which GEM track should you choose?

Choose one track that connects your previous studies to the geospatial work you want to do. Each route places you at a different university in each year:

  • Geospatial Planner: Tartu, Estonia, then Twente, the Netherlands — urban and environmental planning.
  • Geospatial Analyst: Tartu, then UCLouvain, Belgium — environmental monitoring and spatial analysis.
  • Geospatial Developer: Lund, Sweden, then Twente — programming, geospatial AI and remote sensing.
  • Geospatial Modeller: Lund, then UCLouvain — environmental simulations and spatial modelling.

You cannot apply to multiple GEM tracks or change tracks after admission. Ask yourself: do your strongest projects demonstrate planning, analysis, software development or modelling?

Does your degree qualify?

You need a relevant recognised bachelor’s equivalent to at least three years or 180 ECTS, with First Class or Upper Second Class performance or its international equivalent. A Lower Second Class degree does not qualify; country-specific academic requirements also apply.

Relevant backgrounds include geography, GIS, environmental sciences, agriculture, planning, engineering, computer science and data science. Other disciplines may qualify where your studies or experience demonstrate suitable preparation.

Still completing your bachelor’s? Apply with your current transcript and an official university statement confirming your status and expected graduation. Submit your qualifying degree and final transcript by 31 July 2027. Work experience is advantageous, not compulsory; there is no age limit, and holding an existing master’s does not prevent an application.

Can you apply without IELTS?

Yes, through an approved alternative test or a recognised exemption; an English-medium instruction letter alone is insufficient. IELTS Academic requires 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in every section.

Alternatives include TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1/C2, PTE Academic and in-person LANGUAGECERT Academic. For TOEFL tests taken after January 2026, GEM lists an overall score of 5, with 5 in reading, listening and writing and 4.5 in speaking. PTE Academic requires 63 overall and 59 per section.

Exemptions depend on approved education-country and study conditions. Check your specific category before relying on one. Duolingo and IELTS General Training are not accepted. Your valid official result must be available by the application deadline.

Which documents should you prepare?

Prepare the requested academic records, English evidence, passport and GEM-format CV. Use this checklist to avoid unnecessary uploads.

Document or information How to prepare it?
Degree and transcript Request official records and certified English translations where needed. Final-year applicants provide their university status letter and current transcript.
English evidence Obtain an accepted, valid result before the deadline, or establish your formal exemption.
Passport Upload a copy of a valid passport.
CV Use the official GEM CV template; keep it within two pages.
Financial information Complete the requested funding information in euros; a separate financial-plan file or proof of funds is not required at application.
Later enrolment documents Provide certified graduation documents by 31 July 2027 and any hardcopies requested by the university.

GEM does not require a separate motivation letter, reference letter or provisional research topic. Prepare clear reasons for your track choice for the selection process.

How do you apply and compete for funding?

Apply through GEM’s DreamApply portal; a complete application automatically enters scholarship consideration.

  1. Check your fit: Review the official eligibility rules and select one track.
  2. Complete your application: Register in the GEM DreamApply portal, pass the eligibility screening and upload the required documents. Follow the GEM application instructions to obtain its CV template. There is no application fee.
  3. Submit and monitor email: Scholarship consideration requires a complete, compliant submission. If shortlisted, complete the recorded online interview; interview participation is required to remain eligible for funding. Invitations normally arrive in February, with interviews expected in February–March.
  4. Check your outcome: Distinguish admission with funding, a reserve-list position and admission without funding before confirming your study plans.

What are the deadlines and your next moves?

The last date to apply for the GEM Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027–2029, coordinated by the University of Twente, is 15 January 2027 at 23:59 CET. The same application deadline applies to self-funded candidates. Final graduation documents are due by 31 July 2027.

Give yourself three tasks today: choose your single track, identify your slowest document and explain how one project or course prepared you for that track. If you need an English test, book it early enough to receive the official result before submission closes.
