Age Limit for Fully-funded Undergrad Scholarships: Complete Guide for International Students

Compare age limits for Türkiye Burslari, CSC, MEXT, GKS, Pearson, UCL and other undergraduate scholarships for international students.

There is a huge buzz across Reddit, Facebook scholarship groups and X about the age limit for fully funded undergraduate scholarships. Applicants repeatedly ask questions such as:

  • “I have just turned 21. Can I still apply for Türkiye Burslari?”
  • “Does the Chinese Government Scholarship accept applicants who are exactly 25?”
  • “I am 29. Am I too old for a fully funded bachelor’s scholarship?”
  • “Does the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship have an age limit?”
  • “Can a mature student apply for the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship?”
  • “Will a gap year make me ineligible?”
  • “Can good grades compensate for exceeding the age limit?”
  • “Can I apply if I have already started university?”

The direct answer is that there is no universal age limit for international undergraduate fully-funded scholarships. Some government scholarships impose strict limits such as under 21 or under 25. Others have no numerical age cap but accept only recent secondary-school graduates, incoming first-year students or applicants who have never started university.

You must therefore check more than your current age. Your date of birth, school graduation year and previous university history may all decide whether you are eligible.

Minimum Age Required to Apply for Bachelor Degree Scholarships Abroad

Scholarship or funding programme Age and academic-stage requirement What applicants should understand
Türkiye Scholarships – Türkiye Burslari Undergraduate applicants must generally be under 21 An applicant who is exactly 21 may no longer qualify
Chinese Government Scholarship – CSC Bachelor’s applicants must generally be under 25 University admission does not override the government scholarship age limit
Japanese Government MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship Uses an exact birth-date cutoff published annually Applicants must use the cutoff for their intended application cycle
Global Korea Scholarship – GKS Undergraduate Applicants must generally be under 25 Previous bachelor’s degree holders are normally ineligible
Brunei Darussalam Government Scholarship Undergraduate and diploma applicants are generally 18 to 25 The annual age-calculation date must be checked
IsDB Undergraduate Scholarship Applicants are commonly required to be no older than 24 Country, financial-need and subject conditions also apply
Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship No university admission age cap, but applicants must be recent school graduates who have not started post-secondary education A young applicant can still be ineligible because of previous university enrolment
UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship No upper-age limit; applicants aged 21 or older are treated as mature students Some courses may impose a minimum age
Reach Oxford Scholarship No upper-age limit; applicants aged 21 or older are treated as mature students Priority is given to students without previous undergraduate study
University of Miami Stamps Scholarship No admission age limit, but applicants must qualify as incoming first-year students Transfer status can make an applicant ineligible
UBC International Scholars Program No numerical age cap, but applicants must normally enter directly from secondary school and pursue their first degree Mature admission at UBC does not automatically create scholarship eligibility
KAIST International Undergraduate Scholarship No numerical age limit; applicants must complete high school and apply as freshmen KAIST does not offer an international undergraduate transfer route
Duke Karsh International Scholars Program No numerical age limit; applicants must enter as international first-year students Long study gaps may require recent proof of academic readiness

Romanian Government Scholarship No general scholarship upper-age limit Applicants must meet the admission rules of the assigned university and programme

Which Fully Funded Undergraduate Scholarships Have Strict Age Limits?

Türkiye Scholarships, the Chinese Government Scholarship, MEXT, GKS, Brunei and several IsDB programmes use strict age conditions. These are normally basic eligibility requirements. High grades, leadership experience, work history or financial hardship will not usually compensate for exceeding the limit.

Türkiye Burslari Age Limit

Undergraduate applicants for Türkiye Scholarships must generally be under 21.

“Under 21” normally means that you must not have reached your 21st birthday by the date used in the relevant application cycle.

This answers one of the most common Facebook questions: “I was 20 when applications opened but turned 21 before the deadline. Am I eligible?”

The answer depends on the official calculation date. Creating an application account before your birthday does not automatically protect your eligibility.

Applicants over the limit can still consider direct university admission and institution-funded scholarships in Türkiye.

Chinese Government Scholarship Age Limit

Bachelor’s applicants for the Chinese Government Scholarship must generally be under 25.

Where the official wording says “under 25,” an applicant who has already turned 25 is normally ineligible.

Another common social media confusion is whether a university admission offer can remove the CSC age restriction. It cannot.

A Chinese university may admit an older applicant as a self-funded student while the government scholarship rejects the same applicant because of age.

MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship Age Limit

MEXT uses an exact birth-date cutoff rather than a broad age range.

Applicants must compare their complete date of birth with the cutoff published for the correct application year.

Applying before your birthday will not help where MEXT requires applicants to have been born on or after a fixed date.

Do not use a previous year’s birth-date cutoff for a new application cycle.

GKS Undergraduate Age Limit

GKS Undergraduate applicants must generally be under 25.

The annual guidelines normally translate this into an exact qualifying birth date.

GKS also applies an academic-stage restriction. An applicant who already holds a bachelor’s degree is normally ineligible for the undergraduate scholarship even if they meet the age requirement.

You must therefore satisfy both the age condition and the educational-background condition.

Brunei Government Scholarship Age Limit

Undergraduate and diploma applicants are generally required to be between 18 and 25.

Applicants close to the upper limit should check whether age is calculated on:

  • The application deadline.
  • The start of the academic year.
  • Another fixed date stated in the call.

An older applicant may still qualify for ordinary university admission in Brunei, but that does not remove the government scholarship age limit.

IsDB Undergraduate Scholarship Age Limit

Applicants for relevant IsDB undergraduate scholarship programmes are commonly required to be no older than 24.

Meeting the age condition is not enough.

Applicants must also meet the relevant:

  • Country requirement.
  • Financial-need condition.
  • Academic standard.
  • Approved field-of-study requirement.

Different IsDB scholarship routes may apply to different countries and applicant groups.

Which Scholarships Have No Numerical Age Limit?

Several university-funded scholarships do not publish a maximum age.

However, “no age limit” does not mean that every applicant can apply regardless of previous education.

The real restriction may be:

  • First-year admission.
  • Recent secondary-school graduation.
  • No previous university enrolment.
  • No completed bachelor’s degree.
  • Direct entry from secondary school.

Does the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship Have an Age Limit?

There is no general University of Toronto undergraduate admission age limit, but the Pearson Scholarship has strict recent-graduate and first-entry conditions.

The University of Toronto assesses mature applicants according to their academic background rather than age.

Pearson eligibility is narrower.

Applicants must normally be:

  • In the final year of secondary school; or
  • Recent secondary-school graduates within the period stated for the relevant intake.

Students who have already started post-secondary education are normally ineligible.

This answers a common social media question:

“I am only 19, but I have completed one year at university. Can I apply for Pearson?”

Normally, no. The problem is not age. The problem is previous university enrolment.

Can Mature Students Apply for the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship?

Yes. UCL does not impose a general upper-age limit for undergraduate admission.

Applicants aged 21 or older when starting their first undergraduate degree are treated as mature students.

A mature international applicant may apply for the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship if they:

  • Qualify for an eligible undergraduate programme.
  • Hold international tuition-fee status.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Submit the scholarship application on time.

Some programmes may impose their own minimum age. For example, Medicine may require students to be at least 18 when the programme begins.

The key rule is that UCL has no general maximum age.

Can Older Students Apply for the Reach Oxford Scholarship?

Yes. Oxford has no general upper-age limit for undergraduate admission.

Applicants aged 21 or older when beginning their course are considered mature students.

Mature applicants follow the same main admissions process as other candidates. Harris Manchester College specifically serves mature students aged 21 and above and has no upper-age limit.

Reach Oxford gives priority to applicants who have not previously studied at undergraduate level.

An older first-time university applicant may therefore be eligible, while a younger applicant who already holds a degree may not be a strong candidate.

Does the University of Miami Stamps Scholarship Have an Age Limit?

The University of Miami does not impose a general undergraduate admission age limit.

However, the Stamps Scholarship is awarded through the incoming first-year admission process.

Applicants must qualify as first-year students rather than transfer students.

This means age itself is not the barrier. Previous college or university attendance may determine whether the applicant belongs in the first-year or transfer category.

Does the UBC International Scholars Program Have an Age Limit?

UBC has no general maximum age, but the International Scholars Program is mainly designed for students entering directly from secondary school.

UBC accepts mature applicants under its general admission system. Mature consideration normally applies to applicants who have been outside full-time education for a significant period.

However, the International Scholars Program has narrower requirements. Applicants must normally:

  • Enter UBC directly from an accredited secondary school.
  • Have graduated within the permitted period.
  • Apply for their first undergraduate degree.
  • Demonstrate significant financial need.

A mature applicant may therefore qualify for general UBC admission but remain ineligible for the International Scholars Program.

Does KAIST Have an Undergraduate Age Limit?

KAIST does not publish a numerical age limit for international undergraduate admission.

Applicants must:

  • Complete high school by the required enrolment date.
  • Apply as international freshmen.
  • Meet KAIST’s nationality and academic conditions.
  • Give up any conflicting degree-seeking status before enrolment.

KAIST does not offer a regular international undergraduate transfer route.

An older applicant may apply where they qualify as a freshman, but someone seeking to transfer an existing degree may not use the same route.

Does Duke’s Karsh Scholarship Have an Age Limit?

Duke does not publish a numerical undergraduate age limit, but the Karsh International Scholars Program is for incoming international first-year students.

Applicants must:

  • Apply for first-year admission.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Meet Duke’s academic requirements.
  • Be eligible for international undergraduate financial aid.

Applicants returning after a long break from education may need to provide recent evidence of academic preparation.

Age alone does not disqualify them, but their admission category still matters.

Can Older Applicants Receive Yale Financial Aid?

Yes. Yale has no practical upper-age barrier for undergraduate admission.

Nontraditional adults may apply through the Eli Whitney Students Program if they:

  • Have been out of high school for at least five years.
  • Do not already hold a bachelor’s degree.

Eligible Eli Whitney students may receive need-based financial aid, including support up to the full cost of attendance. Yale therefore offers a genuine pathway for older undergraduate applicants, but they must use the correct application route.

Does Harvard Have an Undergraduate Age Limit?

Harvard does not impose an age requirement for undergraduate applicants.

Older and nontraditional candidates may apply.

However, previous university study determines whether the applicant must apply as:

  • A first-year student; or
  • A transfer student.

Harvard’s financial assistance is need-based rather than a separate merit scholarship. Admitted international applicants may receive aid according to their demonstrated financial need.

Does Qatar University’s International Scholarship Have an Age Limit?

Qatar University does not publish a numerical maximum age for undergraduate admission.

Applicants must have completed at least 12 years of formal education and meet the academic requirements of their chosen college. However, the International Students Scholarship normally excludes:

  • Transfer students.
  • Visiting students.
  • Non-degree applicants.
  • Applicants seeking a second bachelor’s degree.

An older first-time undergraduate may therefore be eligible, while someone with a completed bachelor’s degree may not be.

Does Stipendium Hungaricum Have an Age Limit?

Stipendium Hungaricum does not impose one central maximum age across all undergraduate programmes. However, applicants must check three separate sets of rules:

  1. The central Stipendium Hungaricum call.
  2. Their country’s sending-partner requirements.
  3. The host university’s programme conditions.

A sending partner may impose its own age limit even where the central scholarship does not. Applicants should never rely only on the general scholarship website.

Does the Romanian Government Scholarship Have an Age Limit?

The Romanian Government Scholarship does not generally publish a maximum age for undergraduate applicants.

However, it covers multiple universities, so applicants must meet the admission conditions of the university and programme to which they are assigned.

Bachelor’s programmes are normally taught in Romanian, with a preparatory language year available where required.

Applicants under 18 may need parental consent, but there is no general central upper-age restriction.

What Does “Under 21” or “Under 25” Mean?

“Under 21” normally means you must still be 20 on the official age-calculation date.

Similarly:

  • Under 25 normally excludes someone who has already turned 25.
  • Maximum age 24 usually includes someone who is still 24.
  • Not older than 25 may include an applicant who is exactly 25.
  • Aged 18 to 25 may include both boundaries depending on the wording.
  • Born on or after a stated date requires your full date of birth to meet the cutoff.

Never treat “under 25” and “25 or younger” as identical statements.

When Is Age Calculated?

Age may be calculated on:

  • The date of application.
  • The application deadline.
  • January 1 of the admission year.
  • The beginning of the academic session.
  • A fixed date stated in the official guidelines.

Your age today may therefore not be the age used by the scholarship provider.

Can Good Grades Compensate for Exceeding the Age Limit?

No. High grades do not normally override a mandatory age condition.

This is one of the most repeated questions on Facebook and X.

An applicant may have:

  • Excellent grades.
  • Leadership experience.
  • International awards.
  • Volunteer work.
  • Strong recommendations.

None of these normally removes a formal age requirement.

Age is usually checked before the competitive assessment begins.

Can an Education Agent Arrange an Age Exemption?

No legitimate agent can privately remove an official scholarship rule.

Applicants should be cautious if an agent promises to:

  • Obtain a secret age waiver.
  • Change the application category.
  • Bypass the date-of-birth rule.
  • Alter supporting documents.
  • Guarantee admission despite ineligibility.

An exception is valid only where it is written in the official call or confirmed by the scholarship provider.

Does a Gap Year Make You Ineligible?

A gap year does not automatically make you ineligible for most international fully funded scholarships.

For scholarships with strict age limits, the gap matters if it causes you to exceed the maximum age.

For scholarships without a numerical age cap, the graduation-year rule may be more important.

For example:

  • Türkiye Scholarships focuses on the maximum undergraduate age.
  • MEXT and GKS use birth-date cutoffs.
  • Pearson requires recent secondary-school graduation.
  • UCL and Oxford may accept mature applicants.
  • UBC International Scholars normally requires direct entry from secondary school.

Applicants must therefore check both age and academic timeline.

Can I Apply After Starting University?

It depends on whether the scholarship accepts transfer or previously enrolled students.

Pearson normally excludes students who have started post-secondary education.

The University of Miami Stamps Scholarship is tied to first-year admission.

Qatar University’s International Students Scholarship normally excludes transfer applicants.

KAIST’s international undergraduate route is for freshmen rather than transfer students.

Other scholarships may allow previously enrolled applicants, but they may have to restart their degree from the first year.

Can Students Over 25 or 30 Win Fully Funded Undergraduate Scholarships?

Yes, but they should focus on scholarships and financial-aid routes without strict government age caps.

Applicants over 25 will normally be outside the undergraduate limits for:

  • Türkiye Scholarships.
  • Chinese Government Scholarships.
  • GKS Undergraduate.
  • Brunei Government Scholarships.
  • Some IsDB programmes.

They may still consider:

  • UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarships.
  • Reach Oxford Scholarships.
  • Yale’s Eli Whitney route.
  • Harvard need-based financial aid.
  • Romanian Government Scholarships.
  • Stipendium Hungaricum, depending on national rules.
  • Duke’s international financial aid routes.
  • University scholarships accepting mature first-year applicants.

Older applicants must still check previous university attendance and first-degree restrictions.

Final Eligibility Check

Before applying, ask:

  1. What is the maximum age?
  2. On which date is age calculated?
  3. Is there an exact birth-date cutoff?
  4. How recently must I have completed secondary school?
  5. Can current university students apply?
  6. Are transfer applicants eligible?
  7. Can someone with a bachelor’s degree apply?
  8. Does the university accept mature applicants?
  9. Does the scholarship have narrower rules than general university admission?
  10. Does my country’s nominating authority impose additional conditions?

There is no universal age limit for fully funded undergraduate scholarships.

A scholarship may reject an applicant for being over 21 or 25. Another may accept applicants aged 30, 40 or older but restrict them through first-year admission, recent school graduation or previous-degree rules.

The correct question is not only:

“Am I too old?”

It is:

“Does my age, graduation history and previous university study fit both the scholarship and the university admission rules?”
