KWI German Fellowships 2027: Answers to Applicant’s Most-Asked Questions

The KWI International Fellowships 2027 are accepting applications from postdoctoral researchers worldwide for a six-month research residence at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Essen, Germany.

Successful applicants will receive a fellowship contract and a monthly pre-tax allowance of €3,000 from 1 April to 30 September 2027. Possible partial reimbursement of travel costs, office space, research infrastructure and institutional support are also available. Applications must arrive by 17 August 2026 at 24:00 midnight CET.

Recent online discussions among researchers considering fellowships in Germany repeatedly raise practical questions: Is the funding a salary? Is German required? Will the allowance cover housing and insurance? Can researchers bring spouses? How closely must a proposal match the host institute? Here is what applicants need to know before submitting.

Is the €3,000 KWI Allowance a Salary?

No. KWI clearly states that selected researchers receive a fellowship contract rather than a full-employment contract.

The €3,000 monthly allowance is paid before tax and is intended to cover:

  • Rent
  • Insurance
  • Living expenses

Applicants should not treat the fellowship as a German public-sector postdoctoral job or assume that it includes employment benefits associated with a salaried university contract. Questions about the actual amount remaining after tax or other deductions are not answered in the call.

This distinction matters because researchers on Reddit frequently compare German salaries with scholarship or fellowship payments and discover that apparently similar monthly figures may come under very different contractual arrangements.

Does the KWI Fellowship Pay Travel and Conference Costs?

KWI may partially reimburse travel expenses for a fellow’s arrival in Essen and departure after the programme. Full reimbursement is not promised.

Additional travel, including conference-related journeys, must be paid from the monthly allowance. The fellowship does not separately confirm funding for accommodation, visa fees, health insurance or family travel.

Can International Researchers Apply?

Yes. The KWI International Fellowship Program is open to researchers from around the world.

Applicants must have:

  • Completed a PhD in the humanities or social sciences
  • No more than six years of postdoctoral experience
  • Completed the PhD in 2021 or later for the 2027 call
  • The ability to work and communicate effectively in English
  • Availability for the fixed six-month residence

German citizens may apply only when they are currently employed at an international institution.

Career interruptions caused by care responsibilities or circumstances connected with being a scholar at risk may be explained in the cover letter. KWI will consider these circumstances when assessing eligibility.

Is German Required for the Fellowship?

No. KWI says knowledge of German is not required because the programme operates through a strong command of English.

Applicants must nevertheless prepare the complete application in English. No English-language test, minimum score or certificate is specified in the call.

Which Research Fields Fit the KWI Programme?

Projects must fall within the humanities, cultural studies or social sciences and connect meaningfully with KWI’s academic agenda.

Current areas include:

  • Science studies
  • Visual literacy
  • Aesthetic practices
  • Constellations of historical impact
  • Dialogues between cultural and social sciences

KWI also encourages interdisciplinary projects that connect methods and theories from philology, cultural studies and the social sciences. The institute’s official programme page confirms that fellows may use the residence to finish a book or special issue, develop a research proposal, establish a research group or strengthen collaboration with Ruhr Alliance universities.

How Closely Must the Proposal Match KWI?

Research alignment is not a decorative part of the application. KWI particularly encourages projects that contribute to conversations already taking place at the institute. A competitive proposal should therefore explain:

  • What the applicant plans to complete in six months
  • How the project connects with KWI’s research agenda
  • Why residence at KWI is useful to the project
  • Whether collaboration with Ruhr universities is planned
  • How the applicant will participate in the institute’s academic community

The project description may not exceed 5,000 characters.

Can Fellowship Winners Bring a Spouse or Dependants to Germany?

The official call does not provide dependent-family funding, spouse employment support, childcare assistance or family accommodation.

Questions about partners and work rights regularly appear in international postdoctoral discussions, but the answer can depend on nationality and immigration status. Applicants requiring such arrangements should seek an individual answer before making relocation plans.

What Will KWI Fellowship Winners Be Expected to Do?

Fellows must normally be present at KWI for at least three days each week. They are expected to attend the Colloquium, lectures, conferences, reading groups and other academic activities.

They must also participate in entry and exit interviews and contribute to the KWI Blog. Teaching is not required, although fellows may join seminars and lecture series at nearby universities.

Depending on resources and scheduling, selected fellows may have an opportunity to organise a workshop. Applicants interested in doing so may describe their idea in the application.

Applicants must combine the following documents into one English-language PDF of no more than 20 MB:

The PDF must be emailed directly to international.fellowship@uni-due.de. KWI does not accept cloud-storage links, external-platform links or applications divided across multiple files.
