German Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin Fellowships 2027–28 Offering Free Education, Stipend and Housing
International researchers in the life and natural sciences can now apply for a funded three-to-five-month residency at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin during the 2027–28 academic year. Applications opened in July 2026 and will close on 1 November 2026 at 23:59 CET.
First, an important clarification: this is not a scholarship for starting a PhD or studying a university degree for free. It is an early-career fellowship for researchers who will already hold a doctorate by the time their Berlin residency begins.
What Does the Fellowship Actually Fund?
Selected fellows receive a full stipend calculated according to their previous salary, together with on-campus studio accommodation. The package also includes travel costs, relocation assistance, daily meals, library and IT services, and help with immigration documents and registration in Germany.
The studio is mainly financed by the institute, although fellows may be asked to negotiate a personal contribution. Applicants should therefore avoid assuming that every accommodation-related expense will automatically be free.
This salary-based approach is particularly relevant because Reddit discussions about German and European postdoctoral fellowships frequently focus on whether a fixed stipend is enough to live on, whether it replaces employment benefits, and whether relocating with a family is financially realistic.
Wissenschaftskolleg does not advertise one universal monthly amount. The final stipend depends on the successful applicant’s previous salary.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants may come from the life sciences, natural sciences, medicine or psychology. Eligible career stages include postdoctoral researchers, clinicians, junior group leaders, lecturers, assistant or associate professors and early-career principal investigators.
There is no nationality, age or narrow subject restriction. However, applicants must:
- Hold a PhD, MD or comparable doctorate by the fellowship’s starting date
- Have at least one lead-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal
- Be at an early stage of their research career
- Work outside a Berlin-based institution
Successful candidates usually have at least two years of postdoctoral experience, but this is an indication of competitiveness rather than a strict minimum rule. Researchers who have already worked as principal investigators for more than five years are advised to apply for a regular Wissenschaftskolleg fellowship instead.
Current PhD candidates may therefore apply only when they will have formally obtained their doctorate before beginning the residency.
What Can Fellows Research Without a Laboratory?
This is the unusual part: the fellowship provides no laboratory space.
Applicants should not propose a project that depends on performing new wet-lab experiments in Berlin. The residency is designed for developing research questions, analysing existing findings, writing papers or books, planning future experiments, preparing grants, building collaborations or developing an independent research programme.
The strongest proposal will explain why stepping away from routine laboratory or clinical work is necessary and why the project would benefit from conversations across disciplinary boundaries.
Can Fellows Bring Their Families?
Partners and families are welcome, but suitable family accommodation cannot be guaranteed because the institute has limited housing. Applicants planning to relocate with children or a partner should contact the programme before making assumptions about space, costs or schooling arrangements.
How Competitive Is the Application?
Applicants must submit a project proposal of no more than 1,000 words, a motivation letter of up to 500 words, a CV and a publication list identifying up to five major publications. No predetermined research topic or Berlin host supervisor is imposed.
The scientific committee evaluates academic achievement, future promise, project quality, significance and interdisciplinarity. A technically impressive proposal may therefore fail if readers outside the applicant’s narrow specialization cannot understand why the idea matters.

The last date to apply for the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin College for Life Sciences Fellowships 2027–28 is 1 November 2026 at 23:59 CET. Successful fellows will complete a residency of three to five months between September 2027 and July 2028.
