16 Forbes-Ranked U.S. Colleges With No Application Fee for 2027 Admissions

International students planning U.S. undergraduate admissions for 2027 can currently apply to several highly ranked American colleges without paying an admission application fee.

And these are not obscure institutions.

Our latest review of Forbes America’s Top Colleges 2026 found colleges ranked as high as #25, #46, #55 and #69 where the undergraduate application currently costs $0. Forbes’ latest ranking covers 500 U.S. colleges, with MIT occupying the #1 position.

There is one important distinction: Forbes ranks the colleges—it does not rank universities according to application fees. For this review, Forbes’ current 2026 rankings were therefore cross-checked separately against current admissions information published by the universities themselves.

For students applying to several U.S. institutions, the savings can become meaningful very quickly.

Which Forbes-Ranked Colleges Have No Application Fee?

Here are 16 universities and colleges currently verified with a free undergraduate application route:

Wellesley College — Forbes #25

Yes, Wellesley currently charges no undergraduate application fee.

Wellesley is the highest Forbes-ranked institution identified in this review, sitting at #25 in Forbes Top Colleges 2026. Its admissions office explicitly states that there is no fee to apply.

International applicants can also apply, although prospective students should remember that Wellesley is primarily an undergraduate women’s college.

Colby College — Forbes #46

Applying to Colby College is currently free.

Forbes ranks the Maine liberal arts college #46 nationally for 2026, while Colby’s admissions materials confirm that it does not charge an admission application fee. Its international admissions office also says international students follow the same general application process as domestic applicants.

Smith College — Forbes #55

First-year students can currently apply to Smith without paying an application fee.

Smith is ranked #55 by Forbes for 2026 and accepts first-year applications through both the Common Application and Coalition Application. Its admissions office confirms there is no application fee.

Smith is another women’s college, so applicants should check its undergraduate eligibility policy before adding it to their list.

Grinnell College — Forbes #69

Grinnell’s application is free, including for international students.

This is one of the clearest options for foreign applicants. Forbes ranks Grinnell #69, while the college’s international admissions office specifically tells overseas applicants that it does not charge an application fee.

Grinnell also says eligible admission applicants are automatically considered for its scholarships without completing a separate scholarship application.

Carleton College — Forbes #73

Carleton does not charge an admission application fee.

Ranked #73 in Forbes Top Colleges 2026, Carleton says applicants do not even need to request a fee waiver because there is simply no fee to apply.

That makes Carleton another useful option for students building a wider U.S. application portfolio without accumulating application charges.

Colorado College — Forbes #81

Domestic and international students can currently apply to Colorado College for free.

Forbes places Colorado College at #81, while its international admissions page states directly that there is no fee to apply. Applicants may currently use the Common Application or Coalition application through Scoir.

Kenyon College — Forbes #83

Kenyon College currently has no first-year application fee.

Kenyon ranks #83 in Forbes’ 2026 list. Its admissions office confirms that first-year applicants can choose among Early Decision I, Early Decision II and Regular Decision without paying an application fee.

Applicants are also considered for merit scholarships during the admissions process.

Tulane University — Forbes #87

Tulane offers a $0 undergraduate application through the Common Application.

This is particularly notable because Tulane is a larger research university rather than a small liberal arts college. Forbes currently ranks it #87 nationally, while Tulane states that students can apply to all of its undergraduate academic programs with no application fee through the Common App.

International applicants are also considered for Tulane merit scholarships, including awards that can potentially cover full tuition and fees or, in some cases, the full cost of attendance.

Bryn Mawr College — Forbes #95

Bryn Mawr currently charges no undergraduate application fee.

The college is ranked #95 by Forbes for 2026 and its admissions instructions explicitly list “No application fee” for students applying through the Common Application.

International first-year applicants are included within Bryn Mawr’s undergraduate admissions system, although its financial-aid conditions should be checked separately.

Rhodes College — Forbes #104

Rhodes charges no application fee for first-year or transfer applicants.

Forbes ranks Rhodes #104 nationally, and the college’s current admission catalogue confirms that no application fee is required for either first-year or transfer applicants.

Applications are submitted through the Common Application.

Oberlin College — Forbes #114

Oberlin’s College of Arts & Sciences has a free application—but Conservatory applicants need to pay attention.

Forbes ranks Oberlin #114. Students applying to the College of Arts & Sciences pay no application fee and do not need to submit a supplemental essay.

The rule is different for the Conservatory of Music. Undergraduate Conservatory applicants can face a $100 application fee, although eligible students may request a waiver through the Common Application.

So Oberlin belongs on the $0 list specifically for its Arts & Sciences undergraduate route—not automatically for every application offered by the institution.

Macalester College — Forbes #121

Macalester does not currently charge an admission application fee.

Forbes places Macalester at #121, while the college continues to describe elimination of its admissions application fee as part of its access policies. Current international application information for the 2027–28 cycle is also already appearing on Macalester’s admissions pages.

International students seeking financial aid should, however, pay attention to separate financial-aid documentation requirements.

Mount Holyoke College — Forbes #133

Mount Holyoke is free to apply to, including for international first-year students.

The college ranks #133 in Forbes Top Colleges 2026. Mount Holyoke explicitly states that all first-year applicants, including international students, can apply through its available admission plans without paying an application fee.

For an international applicant looking specifically for universities whose official pages clearly confirm the $0 policy, Mount Holyoke is therefore one of the strongest entries on this list.

Denison University — Forbes #168

International applicants can apply to Denison without paying an admission fee.

Forbes ranks Denison #168, and Denison’s dedicated international admissions page explicitly advertises “No fee to apply for admission.”

Denison also does not require a supplemental admission essay under its current general application policy.

Illinois Wesleyan University — Forbes #177

Illinois Wesleyan’s Fall 2027 application is already open—and it is free.

This is one of the most immediately actionable choices on the list. Forbes ranks Illinois Wesleyan #177, while the university says its application for Fall 2027 is now open and that it does not charge an application fee.

Its international admissions FAQ goes further, stating that applying is cost-free for both domestic and international applicants.

Beloit College — Forbes #264

Beloit College also offers a free undergraduate application.

Beloit appears at #264 in Forbes Top Colleges 2026 and currently says there is no fee to apply. Its POWER application is advertised as a fast, free application route.

Beloit also considers applicants for substantial merit scholarships, which makes the institution worth investigating beyond the $0 application itself.

Does $0 Application Fee Mean the Entire Admission Process Is Free?

No. A free university application eliminates the admission fee, not every expense associated with studying in the United States.

International students may still need to budget for English-language testing, financial-aid forms, document translation or evaluation, visa charges, the SEVIS fee, health insurance, travel and eventually an enrollment deposit.

A university can therefore truthfully advertise a $0 application fee while other parts of the admission, financial-aid or immigration process still cost money.

Applicants should particularly distinguish between the admission application and the CSS Profile. Some colleges on this list charge nothing to apply for admission but use financial-aid documentation that may involve a separate fee.

Should You Apply to All 16 Just Because They Are Free?

No—use the absence of an application fee to broaden a sensible college list, not to submit random applications.

Before applying, check four things: whether your intended major is available, whether your academic profile is competitive, whether international students qualify for scholarships or need-based aid, and whether you could realistically afford the remaining cost if admitted.

For international students, a $0 application becomes much more valuable when it is combined with substantial scholarships or financial aid.

That is why schools such as Grinnell, Tulane, Kenyon, Mount Holyoke, Denison, Illinois Wesleyan and Beloit deserve closer investigation rather than being treated merely as “free application” universities.

What Should 2027 Applicants Do Now?

Start building your application list now, but verify the fee once more before final submission.

Several institutions have already moved their admissions information toward the 2027 entry cycle, and Illinois Wesleyan explicitly says its Fall 2027 application is open.

Application-fee policies can still be revised by universities. Applicants should therefore check the final submission screen and the institution’s official admission instructions before sending an application.

The important opportunity for 2027 applicants is already clear: being Forbes-ranked does not necessarily mean paying an expensive application fee. At least 16 colleges in the current Forbes 2026 ranking have now been verified with a $0 undergraduate application route.
