Undergrad Excellence Scholarships 2027 at Scotland’s University of St Andrews Open

A full-tuition undergraduate scholarship in the UK is rare enough. One that lets you apply before you even receive your university offer is rarer still.

The University of St Andrews International Excellence Scholarship 2027 gives one outstanding overseas student a 100% tuition-fee award for the full duration of their undergraduate degree. Applications open on August 17, 2026, and prospective students do not need to wait for an admission decision before entering the scholarship competition.

Do not confuse the University of St Andrews in Scotland, United Kingdom, with St. Andrews University in North Carolina, United States which also has currently open undergrad and postgrad scholarships. That makes this an opportunity where timing matters almost as much as grades: submit your St Andrews course application first, wait roughly two working days for access to the university’s application portal, and then move directly to the scholarship form.

One Full-Tuition Award — and No Second Prize

The International Excellence Scholarship is one of St Andrews’ most competitive undergraduate awards because only one full-tuition scholarship is available.

The successful student will have their tuition fees covered annually for the duration of the undergraduate programme.

This is not a maintenance scholarship. Living costs, accommodation, travel and personal expenses are not described as part of the award, so international applicants should still plan separately for those costs.

Which Students Can Apply?

The scholarship is available to prospective students who:

• Hold overseas fee status;
• Are entering an undergraduate degree at St Andrews in 2027;
• Are entering their first year, including approved direct entry into Year 2; and
• are applying to an eligible subject.

Medicine is excluded, as are the BA International Honours joint programmes with William & Mary.

Eligible areas include subjects across Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences, including Computer Science, International Relations, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Business, Philosophy, History, Modern Languages and Psychology.

Transfer students from another institution are not eligible.

The formal assessment criterion is academic merit, but the application still gives candidates room to distinguish themselves. Applicants receive a maximum 2,000-character motivation statement in which they should explain why they want the scholarship, how they expect to benefit from it, and what they would contribute to the St Andrews community.

This is not the place to repeat the personal statement from the course application.

A stronger answer should highlight:

• Exceptional academic results;
• Prizes or academic distinctions;
• evidence of intellectual curiosity;
• Activities linked to the intended field;
• Personal experiences that shaped the applicant’s education; and
• What would make the candidate useful to the wider university community.

The eventual scholar is also expected to participate in the Student Ambassador Scheme, including outreach and admissions-related activities.

Two References — and They Cannot Come From the Same Person

This is one of the easiest places to make an avoidable mistake.

Applicants need one academic reference and one personal reference.

The academic reference should normally come from a teacher, head of year, academic tutor or adviser. It must be on official letterheaded paper, signed and dated, and should not exceed one A4 page.

The personal reference should come from someone who knows the applicant’s non-academic qualities well—for example an employer, volunteer supervisor or academic adviser familiar with the student beyond grades.

Family members and close friends are not acceptable referees.

The two references must not be written by the same person.

If referees send their letters directly to the university, applicants remain responsible for making sure they arrive before the scholarship deadline. St Andrews will not chase them on your behalf.

Applying for scholarship funding does not negatively affect the academic course application, and applicants do not have to wait for an offer before applying.

The Deadline — Do Not Wait for an Offer Letter!

Applications for University of St Andrews International Excellence Scholarship open on August 17, 2026 and close on January 27, 2027. The important bit is not merely remembering January—it is remembering that your scholarship portal access only appears after the course application has been submitted and processed. In other words, January 27 is a deadline, not an invitation to begin looking for referees on January 26.

Scholarship results: Successful applicants should expect notification during the week commencing March 17, 2027.

For a strong international undergraduate applicant, the appeal is obvious: one scholarship can remove the tuition bill for an entire St Andrews degree.
