A £10,000 scholarship can be excellent news and still leave a £25,000 problem. Is GREAT fully funded? Can a fresh graduate apply? Must you obtain a university offer first? Does it cover living and visa costs—and is a UK master’s worth the balance?
The direct answer is that GREAT is a valuable tuition-fee scholarship for selected one-year UK postgraduate courses, but it is not normally a complete funding package. Applicants must qualify for a specific country-university-course combination, secure the required admission offer and finance everything the award leaves unpaid.
Is the GREAT Scholarship 2027 Open?
The 2027 cycle has begun appearing at individual universities, but the complete nationwide 2027–28 programme has not yet been published centrally.
As of July 31, 2026, the British Council’s main page still covers 2026–27: more than 140 scholarships at over 60 universities for students from 18 countries. Southampton has separately confirmed a 2027 award for eligible US applicants, opening in September 2026, while Robert Gordon University says September 2027 applications for Indonesia and Pakistan will reopen in the new year.
Do not assume that every 2026 country, university or course will return unchanged. The final university page—not an old scholarship list—determines eligibility.
What Does GREAT Scholarship of UK Actually Pay?
The standard award contributes at least £10,000 toward tuition. It is normally entered as a tuition reduction, not deposited into the student’s personal account.
It does not ordinarily cover remaining tuition, accommodation, food, airfare, the Student visa, the Immigration Health Surcharge, university deposits or dependants. Some universities offer more: Manchester’s 2026–27 awards are worth £15,000. That does not make £15,000 the general 2027 amount; applicants must use the value published by their chosen institution.
A £24,000 course does not become free after a £10,000 scholarship. It leaves £14,000 of tuition, followed by living and immigration costs. The correct question is not “How much did I win?” but “How much must I still pay?”

Who Can Apply?
There is no universal application for every international student. Applicants must normally be citizens—and often permanent residents—of a country selected by the participating university.
The current 2026–27 programme covers Bangladesh, China, Egypt, France, Ghana, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Spain, Thailand, Türkiye and Vietnam. That is not yet the guaranteed 2027–28 list. Southampton’s announced US award already shows that the next map may differ.
Applicants generally need an undergraduate degree, sufficient academic standing, accepted English evidence, subject motivation and willingness to represent the programme. There is no universal GPA, IELTS score or fixed work-experience requirement. A university may demand a UK 2:1 equivalent or particular English score; another may assess candidates differently. Fresh graduates remain possible where experience is not mandatory, provided they show relevant research, internships, leadership or projects.

Which Degrees Qualify?
The safest fit is a one-year, full-time, in-person taught master’s such as an MSc, MA or LLM. MBA, MRes, two-year, distance, part-time, clinical and research programmes may be excluded. Bachelor’s and standard PhD programmes generally sit outside the main scheme.
Manchester’s current award, for example, excludes its MBA, MPhil, architecture, teacher-training, clinical medicine, dentistry and numerous research master’s courses. “Postgraduate eligible” therefore never means “every postgraduate course eligible.”

Do You Need an Offer before applying for Great Scholarship?
Usually, yes. Participating universities administer their own competitions rather than using one central British Council form.
The normal sequence is to find an eligible course, apply for admission, receive the required conditional or unconditional offer, submit the separate scholarship form and then complete any English, academic, deposit and acceptance conditions.
Southampton’s 2027 US award requires an offer for an eligible one-year Arts and Humanities programme. Cardiff’s current competition similarly requires candidates to hold an offer before applying. Waiting until the scholarship deadline to apply for admission could therefore mean receiving the offer too late.

How Competitive Is It?
GREAT should be treated as a reach scholarship, not an automatic discount. Some universities allocate only one award to applicants from an entire eligible country. Cardiff currently offers six scholarships across six nationalities—one recipient per country—while UCL offers one each for Nigeria and Pakistan.
A trustworthy universal acceptance rate is unavailable because universities commonly publish award numbers without disclosing the number of eligible applications. Selection may consider academic merit, financial need, course fit, achievements, career plans and ambassadorial potential.
Strong applications replace claims with evidence. “I am an impactful leader” is weak; a measurable project result, clearly connected to the chosen course and future work, gives the committee something it can assess.

Can You Apply to Several Universities?
Generally, applicants may enter several university competitions if they meet each institution’s rules. Each application requires its own admission offer, deadline and tailored response.
Winning two awards does not mean they can be combined. York permits its GREAT award to be combined with certain departmental scholarships, while Portsmouth states that its award cannot be combined with another scholarship, discount or fee offer. Robert Gordon University applies only the most beneficial individual award. An award cannot normally be transferred, and tuition discounts do not produce cash beyond the fee.

What Happens With the CAS and Visa Funds?
The scholarship does not automatically remove the deposit or Student visa financial requirement.
The university should record the award or reduced tuition balance on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Unless exempt, the applicant must still demonstrate the outstanding tuition plus the prescribed maintenance funds and comply with UK financial-evidence rules. If financial sponsorship is not recorded on the CAS, UKVI may require an acceptable sponsor letter.
Before applying, request written confirmation of the original fee, scholarship deduction, deposit credited and final balance.
There is also a major 2027 planning change: under current UK rules, Graduate visa applications made from January 1, 2027 receive 18 months rather than two years; doctoral graduates continue to receive three years. A student starting a one-year master’s in late 2027 should not evaluate the investment using outdated two-year post-study claims.

Is It Worth Accepting?
GREAT is attractive when it reduces a strong, career-relevant degree to an amount the applicant can safely finance. It deserves reconsideration when attendance requires high-interest debt, sale of essential family assets or an assumption that immediate part-time employment will pay tuition.
Calculate:
Remaining tuition + realistic living costs + immigration and travel charges − secured funds
Do not count a future UK job as guaranteed income. A Graduate visa provides time to seek work; it does not promise employment or employer sponsorship.

Application Deadline and Final Verdict
There is no single GREAT Scholarship 2027 deadline. Southampton’s confirmed US award is scheduled to open in September 2026 and close on April 30, 2027. Robert Gordon University currently lists June 2027 for its planned Indonesia and Pakistan awards, with applications expected to reopen in the new year. Other universities will set separate dates after confirming participation.
Prepare transcripts, references, English evidence, CV achievements and admission applications early, but verify every condition against the final 2027 page before submitting.
