Who Can Apply for GREAT Scholarships 2027? Countries, Universities, GPA, IELTS and Work Experience Explained

The GREAT Scholarship in UK is open only to applicants whose nationality, university, master’s programme and academic profile match a specific participating award. It is not a single scholarship available at every UK university or to students from every country.

Applicants normally need an undergraduate degree, admission to an eligible one-year postgraduate course, acceptable English-language evidence and a strong reason for choosing the subject. There is no universal GPA, IELTS score or fixed work-experience requirement across all GREAT Scholarships.

Which Countries Are Eligible for Great Scholarships?

The final nationwide country list for the 2027–28 academic year has not yet been published centrally. The current programme includes applicants from countries such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Mexico, Türkiye, Thailand, Vietnam and several European countries.

However, the country list can change between cycles. A nationality included in the previous round is not automatically guaranteed a place in 2027.

Applicants must also understand that eligibility is not based on nationality alone. Many universities require candidates to be both citizens and permanent residents of the selected country.

Which Universities Can You Apply To for GREAT Scholarship?

Each participating university offers GREAT Scholarships to applicants from particular countries. For example, a university may offer one award for Pakistan, another for Nigeria and none for India. Another university may participate only for applicants from China or Indonesia (Ref).

Applicants cannot therefore select any university appearing on a general GREAT list. They must confirm that:

• Their country is included by that university.
• Their selected course is eligible.
• They hold the required admission offer.
• They meet the university’s scholarship deadline.

One applicant may have ten eligible universities, while another nationality may have only two or three.

Which Master’s Courses Qualify?

The strongest match for the British Council’s Great scholarship is normally a one-year, full-time, campus-based taught master’s degree. Commonly eligible programmes include MSc, MA and LLM courses. MBA, MRes, two-year master’s, distance-learning, part-time, clinical and research programmes may be excluded.

Bachelor’s degrees and standard PhD programmes are generally not funded through the main GREAT Scholarship scheme. Course eligibility is university-specific. An MSc in Public Health may qualify while a clinical medicine programme does not. An MBA may be accepted at one institution and excluded at another.

What GPA Is Required to Qualify for GREAT Scholarship?

A practical target for a GREAT Scholarship applicant is at least a 3.0–3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale, although competitive universities and courses may expect 3.5 or above. GREAT has no universal GPA because candidates must first satisfy the admission requirements of their selected UK master’s programme. Typical thresholds are:

• Engineering and computer science: approximately 3.0–3.3, rising to 3.5–3.7 for highly selective programmes requiring a strong UK 2:1 or First.
• MBA programmes: commonly 3.0–3.3, usually combined with three or more years of relevant professional experience. Exceptional experience may sometimes compensate for weaker grades.
• Arts and humanities: around 2.7–3.0 at universities accepting a UK 2:2 equivalent, but competitive programmes may expect 3.3 or higher.
• Biomedical, public-health and medical-science master’s: generally 3.0–3.3, with selective clinical or research-oriented programmes often expecting stronger results.

These figures are planning ranges, not universal conversions. UK universities assess grades according to the applicant’s country, university and grading system.

For scholarship competition, merely meeting the course minimum is rarely enough. A candidate with a 3.3–3.7 GPA, strong subject relevance and convincing achievements will generally be better positioned than someone entering at the lowest admissible threshold.

Is IELTS Compulsory for GREAT scholarship?

IELTS is not universally compulsory, but applicants must meet the university’s approved English-language requirement.

Universities may accept IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge English or recognised previous English-medium education. Some GREAT awards may impose a higher English score than the normal course requirement.

Applicants can sometimes apply with a conditional offer before completing IELTS, but they must satisfy the language condition before the university’s final deadline.

Is Work Experience Required for GREAT Scholarship Opportunity?

GREAT does not normally require a fixed number of work-experience years. Fresh graduates may apply where the university does not demand professional experience. They can demonstrate suitability through internships, research, volunteering, student leadership or relevant projects.

Experienced applicants should explain how their work exposed a specific knowledge gap that the UK master’s will address.
