The scholarship structure and application dates are confirmed in NTHU’s official Spring 2027 international admission guidelines.
Step 1: Check Which Degree You Can Apply For
The academic progression is straightforward. A high-school graduate may apply for a Bachelor’s programme, a Bachelor’s degree holder may apply for a Master’s programme, and someone with a Master’s degree may apply for a PhD.
But international students should not stop at degree eligibility. Check whether your exact programme is actually available in Spring 2027 and whether it provides enough English-taught coursework for graduation.
Step 2: Check the English Requirement Before Booking IELTS
You do not automatically need IELTS. NTHU’s general minimum English requirement accepts IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEIC 750, legacy TOEFL iBT 71 or CEFR B2.
You may also qualify without a test if your previous degree was fully taught in English and your university provides an official statement. However, some departments set higher requirements. The university specifically warns applicants to check programme-level rules before relying on the general minimum.
Step 3: Understand What “Scholarship” Means at NTHU
For Bachelor’s and Master’s students, the Type A scholarship covers tuition, miscellaneous fees and credit fees and adds NT$5,000 per month. Type B covers the academic fees without the monthly stipend.
PhD funding is much stronger.
Eligible doctoral students in several science, engineering, computing, medicine, technology and education colleges can receive full tuition plus NT$20,000–40,000 per month. Humanities and Social Sciences PhD students under the stated scholarship route receive NT$10,000 per month.
So do not assume every student receives the same amount.
Step 4: Prepare the Documents That Commonly Cause Delays
Applicants need academic certificates, transcripts, passport or nationality evidence, financial proof, a statement of purpose and two recommendation letters.
Master’s and PhD candidates should prepare a one- to three-page statement of purpose explaining why they chose NTHU and their intended programme. You also need financial evidence of at least NT$120,000 or US$4,000, unless you already hold acceptable scholarship proof.
Step 5: Apply for Admission and Scholarship Together
Inside the NTHU international application portal, select “Apply for NTHU International Student Scholarship” under the scholarship section.
There is no separate scholarship portal for this award. Scholarship results are expected around mid-December 2026.
One exception matters: students applying to the College of Semiconductor Research cannot use the general NTHU International Student Scholarship and should check that college’s separate funding arrangements.
Should International Students Apply?
Yes—especially if you are targeting a research-based Master’s or PhD and want a combination of English-accessible programmes, tuition support and potentially strong monthly doctoral funding.
Before applying, confirm three things: your programme is open for Spring 2027, its language requirement matches your qualifications, and the scholarship amount attached to your college is sufficient for your study plan.
That quick check can save you from applying to the wrong programme—or missing one of the better-funded graduate opportunities in Taiwan.
