10 Chinese Universities With Lowest GPA Requirements for 2027 Entry – 200 Universities Checked

A 2.5/4.0 GPA can be enough to meet the published academic entry requirement at some Chinese universities where Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) – High level postgraduate scholarship 2027-2028 funding is available, while several other universities publicly set their starting point around 70% to 75%.

That is the central finding of our review of official admission and scholarship information from 200+ Chinese universities.

There is an important catch: there is no single GPA number that applicants can treat as the universal CSC Chinese government high level postgrad scholarship eligibility cutoff. Universities and sometimes individual programs publish their own academic requirements. Many highly ranked Chinese universities do not publish a numerical minimum at all and instead select applicants based on overall academic performance.

For that reason, this ranking includes only universities where we found a numerical GPA, percentage or equivalent academic threshold on an official university page connected either directly to CSC applications or to a program through which CSC funding is available.

Lowest Published GPA Requirements at 10 China Universities for High Level Postgrad China Government Scholarships 2027 Intakes

Important: These figures are not mathematically interchangeable. A GPA of 2.5/4.0 should not automatically be reported as 62.5%, nor should a 75% transcript automatically be assumed to equal 3.0/4.0. Applicants should submit their original grading scale unless the university provides an official conversion method.

1# Shanghai University — GPA 2.5/4.0

Shanghai University produced the lowest clearly published university-wide postgraduate threshold we found in the review.

Its current international admission information states that master’s applicants should have a relevant undergraduate academic background with a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4-point scale. The university specifically identifies scholarship students as including Chinese Government Scholarship recipients. Its previous CSC High-Level Postgraduate application guide also stated the same 2.5/4.0 requirement for master’s applicants.

This does not mean a 2.5 GPA will win CSC. It means an applicant at that level is not automatically excluded by Shanghai University’s published academic floor.

2# South China University of Technology — GPA 2.5/4.0

There is a particularly interesting option at South China University of Technology (SCUT).

For the 2026 PhD and Master of Engineering in Soft Matter Science and Engineering, the School of Emergent Soft Matter publishes a minimum of 2.5/4.0 or the equivalent under the applicant’s home grading system. The same official program page says Chinese Government Scholarship funding is available for master’s and PhD applicants.

The crucial qualification is that this is program-specific, not a blanket 2.5 GPA rule for every SCUT degree.

3# Zhengzhou University — 70% or GPA 2.8/4.0

Zhengzhou University is one of the clearest options for applicants whose universities use different grading systems.

Its official Chinese Government Scholarship page states an academic benchmark of approximately 70 points on the percentage scale, GPA 2.8/4.0, or GPA 3.5/5.0.

That makes Zhengzhou particularly noteworthy because the university itself provides alternative grading scales rather than leaving applicants to make their own GPA conversions.

4# Harbin Engineering University — 75/100

Harbin Engineering University’s 2026 undergraduate admission rules require an average grade of at least 75/100.

Importantly, HEU’s current scholarship information confirms that bachelor’s students can receive the Chinese Government Scholarship Type A Bilateral Program, while master’s and doctoral students have access to several CSC Type A and Type B routes.

Applicants should therefore distinguish the 75/100 undergraduate admission floor from the selection standard ultimately used to award CSC funding.

5# Northwestern Polytechnical University — 75%

Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) also publishes an unusually clear figure for its 2026 international undergraduate intake: applicants need an average previous academic score of 75% or above.

The same 2026 guide lists the Chinese Government Scholarship among freshman scholarship opportunities, including CSC Type A and Type B, although CSC applicants also face additional scholarship-specific conditions.

Applicants considering NPU postgraduate CSC funding should be careful: its graduate scholarship requirements can be more demanding than the undergraduate 75% admission figure.

6# Changchun University of Science and Technology — Above 75/100

Changchun University of Science and Technology publishes an overall undergraduate GPA above 75 on a 100-point scale for master’s applicants seeking scholarship opportunities.

Its official master’s program pages specifically place the Chinese Government Scholarship among the scholarships available to candidates meeting this academic benchmark.

Again, 75 is a threshold for consideration, not a prediction of scholarship success.

7# Heilongjiang University — Around 75/100

Heilongjiang University deserves attention because its official CSC scholarship material provides an actual numerical academic condition instead of merely saying applicants must be “excellent.”

Its CSC Silk Road information requires academic performance above 75/100, while its High-Level Postgraduate scholarship material similarly uses a score around the 75-point level.

This places HLJU in the relatively accessible published-threshold group from our screening.

8# University of Jinan — GPA 3.0/4.0

The University of Jinan’s Chinese Government Scholarship Postgraduate Program is unusually explicit.

Applicants for its CSC Type B master’s and doctoral scholarship route must have a GPA of at least 3.0/4.0. The university says scores using 5-point and 100-point systems can be converted accordingly.

The scholarship page also confirms Type B status and university nomination followed by CSC’s final review.

9# Dalian Medical University — GPA 3.0+

Dalian Medical University’s 2026 Chinese Government Scholarship application guide requires applicants to have a GPA of 3.0 or above, with no failed or repeated subjects in the previous academic year.

The scholarship is a CSC Type B route for master’s and doctoral applicants.

One caution: the English notice states “GPA 3.0” but does not specify the GPA scale in that sentence. Applicants should therefore avoid assuming that DMU automatically means 3.0/4.0 and should confirm how their home transcript will be assessed.

10# China Agricultural University — GPA Above 3.0

China Agricultural University’s official 2026 Chinese Government Scholarship High-Level Postgraduate Program requires applicants to satisfy the university’s academic criteria, while its 2026 graduate admission material specifies GPA above 3.0.

CAU therefore enters the lower end of the numerical GPA group we identified, although applicants should remember that it is a competitive university and meeting 3.0 alone says very little about the probability of nomination.

What About Shanghai Ocean University?

Shanghai Ocean University narrowly sits in the same group. Its 2026 CSC High-Level Postgraduate Program requires applicants to be academically outstanding with a GPA above 3.0.

It is worth keeping as an additional option, particularly because its requirement is published directly inside the 2026 CSC application guide.

Does a 2.5 or 3.0 GPA Mean You Can Win Chinese Government Scholarship?

No. A published minimum GPA tells you whether you may clear an academic eligibility gate; it does not tell you the GPA of successful CSC recipients.

This distinction is extremely important.

CSC university nominations are competitive. Universities can assess academic record, university background, research proposal, publications, language ability, supervisor support, interview performance and the strength of competing applications. For example, the University of Jinan explicitly states that CSC conducts a further review after university recommendation and that not every nominated student ultimately receives the scholarship.

An applicant with 2.6/4.0 may therefore technically qualify somewhere that requires 2.5, while an applicant with 3.7/4.0 can still lose the scholarship.

What Our Chinese University Check Revealed?

Perhaps the more surprising finding was what we didn’t find.

Across many major CSC host universities, including several prominent Chinese universities, official 2026 scholarship notices do not give applicants a numerical GPA cutoff. Instead, they use terms such as “excellent academic performance,” “outstanding academic background” or merit-based selection.

That means internet claims such as “CSC requires 3.0 GPA,” “CSC requires 80%,” or “every Chinese university accepts 70%” are misleading.

The safer applicant strategy is to check three things separately:

1. the university’s general admission minimum;
2. the particular degree/program requirement; and
3. the CSC scholarship-specific selection requirement.
4. Among the 102 universities screened for this review, the most applicant-friendly numerical floors we could substantiate from official university material started at 2.5/4.0, with another notable cluster around 70–75% and 2.8–3.0 GPA.

That does not make these CSC scholarships easy to win. It does, however, mean that applicants with an imperfect academic record should not automatically assume they are ineligible for Chinese Government Scholarship opportunities.
