The MARIHE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027 is open to graduates from any academic field who want to build a career in higher education, university management, research policy or innovation.

Successful Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders will receive €1,400 per month for up to 24 months, full coverage of the programme’s €18,000 tuition cost and international health and accident insurance. The two-year master’s degree includes study periods in Europe and Asia, a worldwide internship and a master’s thesis.

Applications for the September 2027 of Erasmus+ MARIHE scholarship intake opened on 2 June 2026 and will close on 21 September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. CEST.

What Is the MARIHE Erasmus Mundus Programme?

MARIHE stands for Master in Research and Innovation in Higher Education. It is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master for applicants interested in how universities are governed, financed, managed and transformed. This is not a teacher-training scholarship. The programme is more suitable for people interested in:

What Does the MARIHE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Cover?

The full MARIHE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship provides €1,400 per month for a maximum of 24 months. The scholarship includes:

• Full coverage of the €18,000 participation cost
• A maximum living and mobility allowance of €33,600
• Health and accident insurance
• Support toward accommodation, travel, visa and installation expenses
• Funding during study, internship, thesis preparation and graduation activities

There is no separate airfare grant on top of the €1,400 monthly payment. Travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses must be managed from the combined allowance.

Applicants should also keep some money available before travelling. The first scholarship payment is made after the student arrives in Krems, Austria. Visa fees, document legalisation, flights and housing deposits may have to be paid earlier and are not separately reimbursed.

Tuition Is Covered Even Without the €1,400 Scholarship

Every student admitted to MARIHE receives coverage of the programme’s €18,000 tuition cost.

Applicants who are admitted without the monthly Erasmus Mundus Scholarship receive a MARIHE Tuition Fee Scholarship. They do not pay tuition but must arrange their own living, travel and visa expenses.

The application form allows you to request consideration for the full Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, the tuition-fee scholarship or both. Applicants who need complete funding should select both routes. Doing so keeps them in competition for the €1,400 monthly award while allowing consideration for a tuition-free place if they miss the fully funded ranking.

A tuition-only offer should not be confused with a fully funded scholarship. MARIHE involves several international moves, so self-financing accommodation and living costs can be expensive.

Who Can Apply for the MARIHE Scholarship 2027?

You can apply with a bachelor’s degree from any academic discipline. Your first university degree must represent at least three years of full-time higher education or approximately 180 ECTS. Where the ECTS system is not used, the qualification must still be recognized as a completed three-year first university degree.

A two-year bachelor’s degree cannot be combined with a later two-year master’s degree to meet this requirement. MARIHE evaluates the first university qualification separately.

Work experience is not compulsory. However, employment or volunteering in a university, research centre, education ministry, international office, student organization or education project can strengthen the application. Applicants who already hold a master’s degree are also eligible.

Can Final-Year Students Apply for Erasmus+ Scholarship?

Final-year bachelor’s students can apply if they will complete the required degree within the programme’s late-document timeline.

You must submit the prescribed statement explaining when the degree will be awarded. The final conferred degree certificate must then be provided by the authorized deadline. A provisional transcript or progress letter will not permanently replace the completed degree.

Can You Apply for MARIHE Without IELTS?

You can apply without IELTS only when you submit another accepted English test or qualify for MARIHE’s official previous-study exemption and the accepted tests include:

• IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, with no component below 5.5
• PTE Academic: minimum score of 62
• Cambridge C1 Advanced: minimum grade C
• Cambridge C2 Proficiency: minimum grade C1
• TOEFL iBT: the required score depends on whether the test was taken before or after 21 January 2026

Duolingo, TOEFL ITP, TOEFL PBT, WAEC and ordinary university English-proficiency letters are not accepted. An MOI letter is not automatically enough. Previous English-taught education must satisfy MARIHE’s specific country and qualification conditions. Applicants should not assume that “my degree was taught in English” guarantees an exemption.

Where Will MARIHE Students Study?

MARIHE is a full-time, on-campus and high-mobility programme and all students complete:

• Semester one at the University for Continuing Education Krems in Austria
• Semester two at Tampere University in Finland
• An Asian specialization in China or India
• A European specialisation in Austria, Finland, Germany, Hungary or Portugal
• A mandatory internship that may be completed anywhere in the world
• A master’s thesis at one of the allocated specialization universities

Students can state their preferred specialisations, but the final placement is decided by the MARIHE consortium. Visa requirements, available places, academic fit and balanced student distribution may affect the allocation. Do not apply only because you want to study in one particular country. You must be prepared to follow the mobility route assigned to you.

Documents Required for the MARIHE 2027 Application

Every applicant must submit 9 documents to apply for the Erasmus Mundus MARIHE scholarship programme in the first round:

1. Completed MARIHE Application Form, dated and signed by hand
2. Valid passport or national identity card
3. Europass CV in English without a photograph
4. Motivation letter using the official template
5. Degree certificates from all university studies
6. Academic transcripts from all university studies
7. Accepted English test or valid exemption evidence
8. Exactly two recommendation letters
9. The prescribed personal essay

Shortlisted applicants later submit one additional document: a short selection video. Applications must be submitted through the official Evalato application portal. Documents emailed separately to the programme are not treated as an application.

There is no published maximum age limit for the MARIHE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027.

Applicants are assessed through their degree, academic record, motivation, relevant experience and programme fit. Graduating several years ago does not make you ineligible.

Can I Apply for MARIHE With a Low GPA?

MARIHE does not publish one universal minimum GPA, but academic performance remains an important part of the selection.

A lower GPA may be balanced partly by strong later results, relevant work, clear career direction, convincing recommendations and a focused motivation letter. It cannot be completely hidden by professional experience.

Explain serious circumstances only when they genuinely affected your grades. Spend more space showing what you achieved afterward.

Can I Apply With an Engineering, Business, Science or Medical Degree?

Yes. MARIHE accepts a first university degree from any discipline. Your application must explain how that background connects with higher education, research management, innovation, institutional leadership or education policy.

A degree outside education is not a weakness when the proposed career transition makes sense.

Is Work Experience Required for the MARIHE Scholarship?

No. Work experience is not mandatory. Applicants without full-time employment can use research projects, university societies, internships, student leadership, volunteering or education-related activities to demonstrate relevant interest.

Relevant experience helps, but it does not replace the required first university degree.

Can I Apply if I Already Have a Master’s Degree?

Yes. MARIHE accepts applicants who already hold one or more master’s degrees. You must explain why another master’s is necessary. Show that MARIHE provides a new specialisation or supports a genuine career transition rather than repeating your previous qualification.

Does a Study Gap Affect Erasmus Mundus Eligibility?

A study gap does not automatically affect eligibility. Account for it clearly in your CV. Employment, family responsibilities, professional training, volunteering, examination preparation or other meaningful activities can explain the period.

An honest explanation is better than leaving several years unaccounted for.

Do I Need Research Publications to Win the MARIHE Scholarship?

No. Research publications are not compulsory. MARIHE also values academic projects, dissertations, institutional work, policy analysis, research assistance and evidence of critical thinking. A publication can strengthen the profile, but it cannot rescue a poorly matched application.

Is an MOI Letter Accepted Instead of IELTS for MARIHE?

An MOI letter works only when the previous qualification meets the programme’s official exemption conditions. A university letter stating that your degree was taught in English does not automatically create eligibility. Applicants outside the approved exemption framework must submit one of the accepted English tests.

Can I Apply While Waiting for My IELTS or TOEFL Result?

A late English-test submission may be permitted when you follow the official procedure and submit the required temporary statement by the main deadline of MARIHE Erasmus+ program. Do not leave the English-language section blank. Book the test early and follow the late-submission instructions exactly.

Can I Apply to Several Erasmus Mundus Scholarships in 2027?

Yes. There is no current general limit on the number of Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programmes to which you can apply. Each application should still be tailored. Reusing the same motivation letter for unrelated degrees usually produces weak applications.

Follow the signature and formatting requirements carefully. Informal, unsigned or generic letters may create formal problems.

Can I Bring My Spouse or Children During MARIHE?

MARIHE does not provide an additional scholarship allowance for a spouse or children. Dependent visa rules may differ across the countries included in your mobility route. Moving between several countries also creates additional expenses for visas, housing, schooling, insurance and travel.

Applicants with dependants should investigate the rules for each possible destination before accepting the scholarship.

Can MARIHE Students Work Part-Time?

Part-time employment may be legally possible under the rules of a particular host country, but MARIHE advises students not to rely on it. The programme is full-time and involves repeated relocation. A part-time job should not be used as the main financial plan, especially when accepting a tuition-only place.

Does Erasmus Mundus Provide One Visa for Every Country?

No. An Erasmus Mundus award does not operate as one automatic visa covering every destination.

Non-EU students normally begin with the Austrian residence process because the programme starts in Austria. Further registrations or visa arrangements may be needed for later mobility, especially for study periods in Asia.

The programme provides guidance after selection, but immigration approval remains the responsibility of the relevant authorities.

Is the MARIHE Tuition-Fee Scholarship Fully Funded?

No. The tuition-fee scholarship covers the €18,000 participation cost but does not provide the €1,400 monthly allowance.
