Morehead-Cain Scholarship 2027 at University of North Carolina: Is it Fully Funded?

International students can compete for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship 2027, but this is not a universally open scholarship where every student can directly submit an application. Most foreign applicants must first be nominated by an approved school or affiliate programme, while certain students from non-nominating schools may still be identified through UNC–Chapel Hill’s Admissions Referral Program.

The scholarship is for students beginning a four-year bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2027. It does not fund master’s degrees, PhDs, exchange programmes or students already studying at another university.

What Does the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Cover?

The Morehead-Cain is a full-cost undergraduate scholarship covering tuition, books, accommodation and meals or an equivalent semester stipend at UNC–Chapel Hill. Its value extends well beyond ordinary university expenses. Scholars also receive access to:

• Four funded summer enrichment experiences in outdoor leadership, civic collaboration, global learning and professional development
• Funding for eligible semester or summer study-abroad opportunities
• Discovery grants for educational projects outside the classroom
• Mentoring, internships and access to the Morehead-Cain alumni network
• An optional pre-university gap year with up to US$8,000 for an approved programme containing a significant international component

The programme therefore funds both the degree and many of the experiences students normally struggle to finance separately.

Who Can Apply as an International Student?

An international candidate must be on track to complete high school in spring 2027, be academically competitive for admission to UNC–Chapel Hill and enter the Morehead-Cain process through an approved eligibility route.

Students attending an official nominating school or affiliate programme must be nominated by that institution. Nominating schools were permitted to submit up to three graduating students, but the nomination deadline for the Class of 2031 was June 30, 2026. Applicants who were not nominated by that date cannot simply nominate themselves internationally.

Can You Apply if Your School Is Not a Nominating School?

Potentially, yes—but through a different and highly selective route. International and other out-of-state students attending non-nominating schools should apply to UNC–Chapel Hill through non-binding Early Action by October 15, 2026. UNC Admissions may refer a small number of exceptional applicants to Morehead-Cain through the Admissions Referral Program. Referred students are then invited to enter the scholarship competition.

Applying Early Action does not guarantee referral, and students cannot submit a separate ARP request themselves.

Is There a Minimum GPA or SAT Requirement?

Morehead-Cain publishes no fixed minimum GPA or test score. Nevertheless, applicants must demonstrate strong performance in demanding high-school courses and remain competitive for UNC admission.

SAT and ACT scores are optional for the 2026–2027 scholarship cycle, and candidates who do not submit scores should not be disadvantaged. Academic results alone, however, will not win the award.

Do Applicants Have to Be Athletes?

No, but applicants must demonstrate “physical vigor.” This can come through sport, dance, outdoor activity, physically demanding performance, regular fitness or another sustained activity showing discipline and persistence. The Foundation states that appropriate consideration is given to candidates with physical limitations.

Selection also examines leadership, intellectual curiosity and character. A long list of titles is less persuasive than evidence that the applicant initiated something, involved other people and produced a measurable result.

Application and Selection Timeline

The Morehead-Cain Class of 2031 application opens on August 15, 2026, and all scholarship application materials are due on October 1, 2026. Already nominated students must also submit a separate UNC application by October 15, 2026, for Early Action or January 1, 2027, under the scholarship’s Regular Decision arrangement.

Semifinalists will be notified in mid-December, finalists in mid-January 2027, and recipients on March 5, 2027. Successful candidates must accept the scholarship by April 5, 2027.

Should You Apply?

Apply if you have already been nominated or can realistically compete through the Admissions Referral Program, possess an excellent academic record and can prove meaningful leadership, character and personal discipline.

Skip this cycle if you are seeking postgraduate funding, will not complete high school in spring 2027 or expect a strong GPA alone to compensate for limited leadership and community involvement.
