Sweden IceLab Postdoc Scholarships 2027 With SEK 720,000 Available
Sweden has opened a rather unusual 2027 opportunity for postdoctoral researchers who enjoy crossing academic borders—and do not panic when biology, mathematics and computer code appear in the same meeting.
Umeå University is accepting applications for three IceLab Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Scholarships, each lasting two years. Applicants may compete through five multidisciplinary projects covering microalgae, bacterial stress, adaptive immunity, biodiversity networks and the performance of elite female athletes.
The important twist is that only three of the five projects will ultimately be funded. Applicants are therefore not merely competing against people in their own discipline; IceLab will select the three strongest project-and-candidate combinations.
What Does the IceLab Scholarship Actually Pay?
Each selected researcher will receive:
- SEK 720,000 as a tax-free scholarship over two years
- SEK 75,000 for research-related expenses
- Multidisciplinary supervision
- Access to the IceLab research environment at Umeå University
- A proposed starting date between January and April 2027
The personal scholarship works out at SEK 30,000 per month for 24 months. The additional SEK 75,000 is research funding, not bonus money for rent, furniture or surviving Sweden’s relationship with winter.
The university explicitly describes the scholarship as tax-free and funded by Kempestiftelserna.
Is This a Salaried Postdoctoral Job?
No. This is a postdoctoral scholarship, not a conventional employment contract.
That distinction matters. Applicants should not automatically assume that the package includes every benefit normally connected to salaried Swedish university employment, such as employment-based pension contributions, paid annual leave or unemployment protection.
Foreign researchers should ask IceLab for written clarification about insurance, sickness arrangements, parental leave, payment schedules and any institutional support available to scholarship holders before accepting an offer. Sweden distinguishes between residence-based and employment-based social benefits, so “tax-free” should not be mistaken for “identical to an employee package.”

Applicants may select one or several projects, but choosing the projects that genuinely match their research experience is likely to produce a stronger application than applying indiscriminately to all five.
Can International Applicants Apply for IceLab Fellowships in Sweden?
Yes. The call accepts applicants holding a Swedish doctorate or a foreign qualification considered equivalent to a doctoral degree. No nationality restriction is stated in the official announcement.
Non-EU or non-EEA candidates will normally need the appropriate Swedish residence permit for research. The Swedish Migration Agency states that accompanying family members may submit their applications at the same time as the researcher. Final permit eligibility will depend on the hosting arrangements and immigration requirements applicable to the selected candidate.
Can Applicants Apply Before Receiving Their PhD?
Yes—but the doctoral requirements must be completed no later than the date on which the scholarship recipient is formally selected.

Is the Three-Year PhD Rule Absolute to Apply for Icelab Fellowship?
Not entirely. Priority will normally be given to applicants who completed their doctorate no more than three years before the scholarship decision. Older doctorates may still be considered where there are recognised reasons such as parental leave, illness, military service, relevant clinical work or comparable circumstances.
Can You Apply for More Than One Project?
Yes. Applicants may select one or several projects. However, applying for all five without explaining the scientific connection may look unfocused. A stronger strategy is to identify one primary project and, where genuinely relevant, a second project that matches the same methodological expertise.

A complete application must include a maximum two-page cover letter, CV with publication list, doctoral certificate or expected-completion evidence, certified academic records, doctoral thesis, relevant publications, contact details for at least two referees and any additional supporting documents.
