Chevening Scholarship 2027–2028 Opens Globally on August 4 2026 for New Applicants
Can university internships count toward Chevening’s 2,800-hour requirement? Do you need IELTS or a university offer? Will Chevening cover an expensive MBA?
For 2027–2028, applications open on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. The scholarship can fund a one-year UK master’s degree, but applicants must first pass a strict eligibility sift, including the revised post-graduation work rule.
Should You Apply or Skip This Cycle?
Apply if you are from an eligible country or territory, completed your undergraduate studies by October 2024, accumulated at least 2,800 post-degree working hours, can identify three eligible courses, and accept the two-year return requirement.
Postpone the application if most of your experience was gained while studying, you remain below 2,800 hours, your courses are disconnected, or your real objective is immediate UK settlement. Ineligible applications are rejected regardless of grades, titles or polished essays.
What Does Chevening Pay For?
A standard Chevening Scholarship normally covers tuition, approved economy travel, the scholar’s UK visa application, arrival and departure allowances, a travel top-up allowance, up to £75 toward required tuberculosis testing, and a monthly living stipend. Rates differ inside and outside London.
“Fully funded” does not mean every expense is covered. University application charges, admission deposits, passports, English tests, premium accommodation, personal travel and family costs may remain the applicant’s responsibility.
MBA applicants face the major exception: Chevening’s contribution is capped at £22,000. An MBA costing £42,000 could leave a £20,000 shortfall unless another source covers it.

The 2,800-Hour Rule Changes Who Is Eligible
Chevening requires at least 2,800 hours of work experience acquired after completing the undergraduate degree. Experience gained while studying no longer counts. Applicants who completed their degree after October 2024 are not eligible for this cycle because insufficient time has passed to meet the requirement.
Eligible post-degree experience can include full-time employment, part-time work, voluntary service and paid or unpaid internships. Applicants may combine up to 15 employment periods. The system multiplies weeks worked by average weekly hours; 35 hours per week for 80 weeks equals 2,800 hours.
Career gaps are not automatically disqualifying, but duplicated periods or unrealistic hours can damage credibility. A candidate with 2,700 valid hours is not “almost eligible”; the requirement is mandatory.

Who Else Can Apply for 2027 Chevening Batch?
Applicants must be citizens of an eligible country or territory, hold an undergraduate qualification permitting UK master’s admission, select three eligible courses, and commit to returning to their country of award for at least two years. A previous master’s degree does not itself prevent an application.
British and dual-British citizens are generally ineligible, subject to limited exceptions. Restrictions also cover UK residence at application, some employment links with relevant UK bodies, and previous UK government-funded study.
How Should You Choose Three Courses?
Applicants must list three different eligible UK master’s courses and apply separately to each university. The Chevening form is not a university application. Eligible courses must be UK-based, full-time, begin in autumn and lead to a taught master’s qualification.
The strongest portfolio is not automatically the three most famous universities. Three ambitious rejections still produce zero unconditional offers. A sensible strategy is:
- One ambitious choice
- One strong but realistic choice
- One safer choice whose entry requirements you clearly meet
All three should address the same professional problem or skills gap. Climate Policy, Environmental Governance and Sustainable Development can form one coherent route. Artificial Intelligence, International Relations and Luxury Brand Management may look like destination shopping rather than career planning.
Use Chevening’s course finder, but verify each programme on the university website because course information can change. Successful candidates must submit at least one acceptable unconditional offer by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027. A deposit condition may remain, but academic, documentary and English conditions must be removed.

What Makes Chevening Scholarship Application Competitive?
Chevening assesses leadership and influence, relationship-building, course choice and future career goals. A senior title is not automatically leadership, and thousands of LinkedIn contacts are not proof of networking.
A strong example follows: Problem → personal action → people influenced → measurable result
Instead of writing, “I led an education campaign,” explain what was failing, whom you persuaded, what changed and what result followed. Networking examples should demonstrate trust, mutual value and an outcome—not merely conference attendance.
Course reasoning should connect a real challenge, skills gap, UK learning and post-study use. Career plans need realistic short-, medium- and long-term stages.
Applicants must write all four essay responses themselves. Chevening prohibits using AI to generate answers and warns that fraudulent, plagiarized or AI-generated applications can be disqualified.

Do You Need IELTS, References or Offers Immediately?
Chevening does not require an English-language score with the scholarship application, but universities may require IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or other evidence. Applicants cannot use an optional pre-sessional English course to remove an outstanding university English condition.
No documents are required to submit the initial form. Applicants provide two referees’ details. Interview candidates later upload photo identification, an official undergraduate degree certificate and two reference letters no later than seven working days before interview. Transcripts are not accepted instead of the degree certificate.
A university offer is unnecessary initially, but waiting until shortlisting is risky: courses can fill, decisions can be delayed and English conditions may take months to clear.

Chevening Scholarship 2027–2028 Application Timeline
Applications for Chevening fully-funded scholarships open on 4 August 2026 and close on 6 October 2026. Eligibility checks begin in October, assessments continue through January, interview shortlists are expected in mid-February 2027, and interviews run from March to April.
Results begin in mid-June, unconditional offers are due on 8 July, and studies start in September or October 2027.
The safest application order is:
Check eligibility → calculate post-degree hours → research three coherent courses → prepare original evidence-based essays → submit Chevening Application → apply early to all three universities → remove every offer condition before 8 July 2027.
Final Applicant Verdict
Chevening is an exceptional scholarship for professionals seeking funded UK education, international networks and greater impact at home. It is not an immediate UK migration route.
Scholars must return to their country of award for two years and cannot use the UK Graduate Route after completing the award.
The strongest candidate is not necessarily the person with the highest GPA or most prestigious employer. It is the eligible applicant who can prove influence, explain why a specific UK degree is necessary and present a believable plan for using that education after returning home.
Chevening does not reward decorative ambition. It rewards evidence, coherence and purpose.
