Chevening vs University Applications Sequence: Which one comes first?
You do not need a UK university offer before submitting your initial Chevening Scholarship application. However, waiting until you win Chevening before applying to universities would be a serious mistake.
Chevening applicants must complete two separate processes:
- Apply for the Chevening Scholarship.
- Apply directly to UK universities.
Submitting the Chevening form does not apply to a university on the applicant’s behalf.
The good news is that applicants do not need a university offer before submitting the initial Chevening application. The dangerous news is that waiting too long to apply to universities can later cost an otherwise successful candidate the scholarship.
What Must You Do by 6 October 2026?
Between 4 August and 6 October 2026, applicants must submit the Chevening application and list three eligible UK master’s courses. You will be asked whether you have already applied to those courses, but applying to the universities beforehand is not compulsory.
At this initial stage, your priorities are to:
- Confirm that you meet all Chevening eligibility rules.
- Identify three eligible and academically coherent courses.
- Check each university’s admission requirements and deadlines.
- Submit the Chevening application by 6 October 2026.
- Begin university applications early enough to resolve delays or conditions.
Should You Apply to Universities Before Chevening Opens?
You may do so when university applications are already available, especially for competitive programmes or institutions with early deadlines.
An early university application can provide several advantages:
- More time to correct missing documents.
- Earlier knowledge of whether your academic profile is competitive.
- Time to meet English-language or academic conditions.
- Reduced pressure near the July offer deadline.
- Access to university scholarships that may have separate early deadlines.
However, do not rush into paying multiple application fees for courses you have not properly researched.
What Happens After the Chevening Deadline?
From mid-October 2026 to January 2027, eligible applications are assessed by reading committees. Applicants are expected to continue pursuing university admission during this period rather than waiting passively.
Chevening plans to announce interview shortlists around mid-February 2027, with interviews taking place during March and April 2027. Interview candidates must upload required documentation at least seven working days before their interview.
When Must the Unconditional Offer Be Submitted?
Successful candidates must submit at least one unconditional offer from one of their approved course choices by 5:00 p.m. BST on 8 July 2027.
An unconditional offer generally means the university has accepted you without outstanding academic or English-language conditions. Certain financial conditions may be treated differently by institutions, but applicants should never assume that a conditional offer will automatically satisfy Chevening.
What If You Receive an Offer Before Applying for Chevening?
That is acceptable, provided:
- The course is eligible.
- The course starts in the correct 2027 autumn period.
- The offer remains valid.
- The course is one of the choices accepted within your Chevening application process.
An offer for a previous intake cannot simply be reused unless the university formally defers or reissues it for the correct academic year.
Should You Pay a University Deposit?
This depends on the university’s rules, refund policy and your personal financial risk.
Chevening applicants should never assume that nomination or interview shortlisting guarantees funding. Where a university demands a deposit to retain an offer, ask:
- Is the deposit refundable if Chevening is not awarded?
- Can payment be postponed pending the scholarship outcome?
- Will the university waive the deposit for Chevening candidates?
- Does the refund carry an administrative deduction?
- What evidence is needed to request an extension?
Obtain the answer in writing.
Paying a non-refundable deposit solely because you reached the interview stage can become an expensive expression of optimism.
What About IELTS or Other English Conditions?
Chevening itself does not require an English-language score with the scholarship application, but your selected university may require IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge English or another accepted qualification.
Do not postpone the test until June 2027 if your university requires it. A failed test, delayed result or unavailable test date could prevent an otherwise successful candidate from producing an unconditional offer by 8 July.
Chevening also warns that applicants cannot solve an English-language condition by enrolling in an optional pre-sessional English course. Such courses are generally not permitted for satisfying the university condition under the scholarship.
Recommended 2027 Application Calendar
- July–August 2026: Research courses and prepare application evidence.
- 4 August–6 October 2026: Complete and submit the Chevening application.
- September–December 2026: Submit university applications, particularly where admission is competitive or deadlines are early.
- January–February 2027: Follow up on decisions and satisfy outstanding documentation requests.
- March–April 2027: Attend the Chevening interview if shortlisted and continue clearing university conditions.
- May–June 2027: Secure final admission, submit test results and resolve academic conditions.
- 8 July 2027: Submit at least one unconditional offer by the official deadline.
